Is there any evidence milk thistle can help promote liver well being and maybe reduce isolated ALT raise of unknown origin? (no hep, ebv, meds etc)

It's really weak: Milk thistle competes with other molecules at the drug detox centers in the liver, and has shown minimal benefit in a couple of studies; it failed miserably as a treatment for some other common liver problems. I trust you have been checked for hemochromatosis, myopathy, wilson's and autoimmune hepatitis. I'd urge you to stay very physically fit and skip the milk thistle. ...Read more

Is it okay for me to take milk thistle even though I am allergic to ragweed?

Is it okay for me to take milk thistle even though I am allergic to ragweed?

Good question!: Both milk thistle and ragweed are in the asteraceae botanical family. While this might be enough to increase the chance they share common allergens, I was unable to find information in the scientific literature that the allergy to one increased risk to the other. Since information is lacking, be cautious and use the expertise of an allergist. A skin test might be helpful or a stepwise challenge. ...Read more

I heard that milk thistle need alcohol to extract sylamarin so it's hard to take it as tea. Can't I eat the seeds directly from the plant fresh?

You can but...: Apparently you need to take quite a bit to have much of a benefit. The seeds contain about 3-6% silymarin so you need to take about 1/2 ounce of seeds (approximately 1 tbsp.) daily to get a therapeutic amount. They can be eaten whole or ground. See http://newroots.
