What is the best milk thistle brand you could recommend? I was a heavy drinker and recently slowed down and trying to detox/heal my liver some.

IV form possibly: Taking it orally had some anecdotal evidence, but they did a big review of multiple studies about it and found no benefit. The ingredient in milk thistle, silymarin, is being tested supposedly via administration through IV route. Milk thistle, but...: There's some actual science supporting milk thistle for hepatitis c (gastroenterology nov 2008). The other product lists chicory, tamarisk, yarrow and caper bush. I searched the nih database back to 1996 and found exactly nothing. Don't rely no a supplement except as part of a comprehensive plan of care for yourself. ...Read more
No: If you have a fatty liver or liver disease stop eating fatty food, stop eating fried food, stop drinking alcohol, stop taking pain pills and lower your cholesterol. Those type of actions help the liver. Discuss the different medications you take with your doctor to make sure they are not causing any interactions that can harm the liver. ...Read more

Unlikely: The role of milk thistle in fatty lived disease is limited. In hepatitis c one study showed that high intravenous doses may slow progression, but is not a cure. I do not recommend milk thistle to my patients. It is safe and if someone is ademant about taking it i don't necessarily discourage it. Sure, but...: A number of small studies have yielded conflicting results concerning the effectiveness of milk thistle in hepatitis c and chronic liver disease. A systematic review concluded that although milk thistle may decrease liver enzymes in patients with hepatitis c, there was no clear benefit to this or other herbal medications for chronic hcv infection.
