Does Metamucil Soften Stool
Not a stool softener: Metamucil is not a softener per se. Rather it adds bulk and can retain (adsorb to be technically correct) fluid which may 'soften' the stool indirectly. The effect is usually within 24 hours. The dose may need to be gradually increased to (a) be effective and (b) minimize gas, cramps etc. ...Read more
Neither are laxative: Stool sofeners (colace) moisten & soften hard, dry stools whereas fiber supplements (metamucil) buks stool due to both water-holding & increased bacterial mass due to fiber digestion. Both products assume normal GI anatomy without inflammation, stenosis, extrinsic or instrinsic obstruction. Change in bowels is a "red flag", like weight loss or blood in stool, that needs evaluation if persistent. ...Read more
I just had removal of my prostate due to cancer. I am taking a stool softener but it's been two weeks, can I take Metamucil?
Of course, but does: not mean it will work, always trial & error dosage & strategy. Probably healthier is adding above veggies: cauliflower, broccoli, a variety of various lettuce, fresh spinach & many other good choices; add butter, etc. to improve taste/appeal to excellent. Too much of the OTC processed foods/supplements industry is not healthy. ...Read more
Dr said I have small anal fissure. What are the differences between fiber supplement (metamucil) and stool softener. Which one is best to use. Thanks.
Fiber supplement, extra water, and stool softeners all used together are the first line treatment for anal fissure. Fiber is simply indigestible fiber that adds bulk to the stool and makes it easier for the intestines to pass it along. The stool softener causes the stool to retain enough fluid to keep it from getting hard and dry and perhaps reopening the anal fissure.
Some people also use fasting. ...Read more
For small anal fissure. Why do I need Metamucil or stool softener which has 3g/ pill, when1cup of my favorite cooked lentils has 15.6g, 1 pear 8g fiber. ?
You don't: ...Need to add fiber if you get adequate fiber in your diet. The recommendation was made because most people do not ;, for someone that does, adding the supplement wouldn't hurt. This doesn't apply to stool softeners, like colace (docusate sodium). Whereas fiber in your diet can soften stools, it doesn't do it the same way as the medicine, ;, for healing, using both a high fiber diet ; a softener might be advised. ...Read more
I take a prescribed narcotic that I’m sure is the culprit for my constipation. Haven’t been able to pass stool. But can stool softeners soften stool that are already are hard/stuck?
Why does Metamucil make me stool kind of "stringy like"at times. Kind of strings together , i thought this would "soften" not be like icky silly putty?
Stringy stool: Stringy stool is a symptom with many causes, benign and not so benign. Metamucil itself doesn't usually cause stringy stool, but it may have unmasked this symptom. If it is pencil like and persists more than two weeks it may be a sign of luminal (phenobarbital) obstruction. Flat ribbon like stools can be seen in irritable bowel syndrome. If it persists, it should be evaluated further by your doctor. ...Read more

I am taking Metamucil and have noticed white string like things in my stool. Can this be from the fiber? I'm a def hypochondriac and have diagnosed myself with worms please help.
Depends: Metamucil's main ingredient is psyllium husk, a natural plant fiber that is a source of soluble and insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber creates a viscous gel as it travels through the GI tract. The insoluble fiber moves through intact. So hopefully the white worms are just husk remnants. If not go see your Doctor for stool cultures Ova and parasites x 3. ...Read more

Feel constipated, and only able to pass soft thin stools. Could this be some sort of interstinal infection? I eat high fiber and use Metamucil daily.
After taking Metamucil fiber supplement to deal with my excess mucus production and foul odor, my stools are elastic in nature; look like intestines.
See your doctor: Mucous in the stools is not normal. See your doctor as you could have a more serious problem going on. ...Read more
My son is 7 always had a hard time with a bowel movement. Have tried mirilax and metamucil. But his stool is very large. He has normal movement daily?
Chronic constipation: Large-caliber stools mean that your son's colon has enlarged from long-standing constipation & that referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist is warranted. A " clean-out" has to be done before MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) will work. After it's done, he'll need treatment for at least 6 mos. To reduce the risks of medical & behavioral complications of chronic constipation. See his pediatrician first. ...Read more
Gross but my stools have been "rubbery like" and sometimes lighter brown than normal I've been on Metamucil for ibs-c could this be why? Negative colonoscopy/egd, normal liver/kidney labs & hida scan
I am constipated all the time and for weeks.I only would drop out stools when i have stools softeners.i had this problem for the last 2years.Need help?
Yes you do: One with constipation needs to be sure there is no other disease causing it. If constipation is just due to slow movement of the food and poop through the gut, then the things to try are vegetables, water, prune juice, prunes, fiber plus water, Miralax (polyethylene glycol), Senokot or other senna, milk of magnesia, other laxatives, etc. A doctor can evaluate and may prescribe a drug like Linzess. ...Read more
Constipation: Stool softeners are drugs used to do exactly what they are called: soften stool so that it's easier to have a bowel movement w/o straining. In theory, they should do nothing to your bowel as opposed to laxatives which can draw water from your bowel to keep stool soft or irritate your bowel to move stool along. While it's ok to take stool softeners regularly, try to avoid chronic stimulant laxative. ...Read more
Yes, but lower dose: Docusate (doss) is safe for children and it has pediatric dosing tables; do not give a child an adult dose. I would check the medication insert or online at doss's site for this to most accurately dose for pediatrics. Otherwise, it is safe for use in children and I have given my daughter pediatric docusate before. I hope this helps! ...Read more
Depends...: Stool softeners come in many forms (fiber, chemical and 'natural'), all trying to increase the water content of your stools, as opposed to laxatives that stimulate the bowels to go by various actions, some of which may be quite uncomfortable. Beware of the so-called 'natural' softeners, unregulated by the dea, many of which contain harmful laxatives that can damage your colon cells, worsening it. ...Read more
Safe for most kids: Docusate (per pdr) helps moisten & soften hard, dry stools. It is not true laxative, but facilitates natural defecation, usually within 12 to 72 hours. This is safe & available for children over 2, & assumes normal GI anatomy without inflammation, stenosis, extrinsic or instrinsic obstruction. Change in bowels is a "red flag", like weight loss or blood in stool, that needs evaluation if persistent. ...Read more
