Does Low Thyroid Affect Ferritin Levels Iron
TSH of 3.34, low iron and ferritin, pretty low iodine. T3 (liothyronine) and T4 on low end of lab normal. Mild symptoms of hypothyroid. Do I need meds?
Yes, iron: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, given your TSH value you probably do not need thyroid medication. However, you are iron deficient and should take oral iron supplement and multivitamins. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex.
Ferritin is protein complex that binds iron and controls iron levels inside all of our cells. Low levels in the serum is a useful marker of iron deficiency. Macrophages are cells that contain large amounts of ferritin, and this that helps them scavenge RBC at sites of old hemorrhage. High serum ferritin levels occurs from macrophage activation and is a ...Read more
Would low ferritin but hemoglobin of 9.3 cause higher resting heart rate? Cardiologist said hearts ok. Slightly hypothyroid. Have thyroid antibodies.
Slight hypothyroid: Hemoglobin of 9.3 needs close attention. Slightly hypothyroid doesn't mean much. Either you have hypothyroidism or you do not. Please discuss these items with your primary doctor. I would appreciate hearing from you what develops.
What would cause low ferritin (13 last yr, now 9) if RBC indices are normal & so is iron panel? Thyroid ok. I take IM B12 for pernicious anemia. 28f
Early deficiency: Serum ferritin drops off before anemia appears or red cell indices go abnormal. Your physician will ask you about diet, your cycle, and whether you're perhaps having blood loss via the gut -- he / she will check. If you are a non-supplementing vegetarian, please reconsider. Best wishes.
Work up for hair loss and dizzy sitting to standing and tired. Labs ferritin 6 iron saturation 5 wbc 2.8 rbc 2.9 hgb 9.0 crit 26.8 monocytes low 182 total iron 21 thyroid nodules benign?
Need Hematologist: Women often see hair loss when their iron stores are low (as yours are). Dizziness on standing is often related to dehydration (volume depletion). But I am concerned about your low white count, red count, and hematocrit. You may need to be evaluated to see if you are losing blood somehow - or if you are not producing enough red cells (and white cells). I think a hematology opinion is in order.See 1 more doctor answer
Within the past year, I've lost >50% of my hair. Thyroid wnl, ferritin 12. Fp & derm without dx. Take 324mg iron bid. So grateful for any advice/ideas!
I am low thyroid with hasimoto. My doctor only check ft4, tsh. I ask here for ft3, iron, selenium but she told me no. Is enough to do nly ft4&tsh?
Thyroid tests yes: Your doctor is correct that you need thyroid test to monitor your thyroid function. If there are other medical reasons for the additional testing this would be up to her decision. You can discuss this with your physician or ask her to have you see a consultant to help, you can see an endocrinologist regarding the status of your thyroid
Iron serum high (180) yet ferritin levels low (113). Suffering symptoms akin to haemochromatosis. Can treatment (phlebotomy) be justified?
Not necessarily: Serum iron levels are not a good test to make treatment decisions as it is very variable and do not reflect inappropriate iron deposition. Ferritin level is the standard. If there is a concern for hemachromatosis genetic test is available. If indicated, liver biopsy with iron studies can be considered.See 1 more doctor answer
My ferritin level is very low at 9 and has not changed after 3 months of high dose oral iron supplements. Are iron suppositories more effective?
FERRITIN level was only 12, all other parts of iron profile in range, hgb 13.4, wbc 4.5 rbc 4.45 Why is ferritin level low and wbc low end of range?
Ferritin: Ferritin reflects the iron levels "in the bank" so to speak, or storage iron, not what is "in your wallet" or in circulation. It means there is iron deficiency, but you may be absorbing enough to keep hgb/rbc going. WBC varies by individual and various other factors & is unrelated to iron.
My ferritin level (15) dropped low (from 152) and tibc (471) is high, but iron is normal (71) and hgb remains slightly high (17.5). Iron deficiency?
No: Your hemoglobin is high not low that is the most probalbe reason your ferritin is low I simply would check my hemoglobin and the other tests in 6 12 monthst.
Iron panel was normal other than my ferritin. It was only 20, which is low. My iron level was normal with CMP & CBC. WHAT causes just a low ferritin?
Can be okay: 24 nano grams is often given as the bottom of the reference range, so 20 is not a serious sign of illness. The ranges are set so that some healthy folks fall outside. Vegetarians and blood donors often run low. Keep an eye on it
Normal: Your ferritin level is normal. The normal range is 12-150 ng/ml. (1 ng/ml = 1ug/l).
Iron deficiency: Ferritin is an indicator of long term storage fo iron and the TIBC is the chemical in the blood that binds and transports iron. TIBC usually increases when total body iron stores are low but can also increase with hormone supplements or pregnancy. Iron supplements are recommended and are available OTC. They may color BM's black and cause some constipation, so stool softeners are helpful.See 1 more doctor answer
What causes low iron levels? How low are mine exactly? Iron- 22 l (range: 50-170) dibc- 424 (265-497) % saturation- 5 l (15-50) ferritin 6.6 l (6.0-137)
Mild to moderate iron deficiency: This kind of iron deficiency is very common in young women and can be related to heavy periods a diet rich in iron such as red meats and leaky this important plus iron supplement this could correct it if there is no acute or chronic bleeding that is undetected if you suspect a bleeding problem then please see your physician.
I have a low ferritin and normal hemoglobin. Also I have gastritis and can't take iron. How can I raise ferritin level?
Intravenous iron: Iron can be administered intravenously and sufficient amount can be given in one sitting to correct any iron deficiency. You would need to consult your doctor for the need and advisability of this treatment.
