Does Levaquin Treat Strep Throat
I want to know if Levaquin treats strep throat or bacterial pharyngitis since I'm allergic to penicillin and resistant to biaxin (clarithromycin)? .
Not a good choice: Levaquin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and usually preferred for more serious infections. Strep throat is usually still amenable to most first generation antibiotics. Being allergic to penicillin suggests u shd try a cephalosporin which shd help. Resistant to Biaxin (clarithromycin) is unlikely and erythromycins may still work. Relatively safer medications like clindamycin also exist. ...Read more
I'm allergic to everything but cipro (ciprofloxacin) and levaquin I have strep throat and have been taking levaquin for 10 days 750 now its back what can I take?
Is it possible to get strep throat three days after finishing a 10 day treatment of Levaquin (levofloxacin) Infusions?
Strep/Levaquin: LLake ~ anything is possible but I think it would be very unusual in this case. The most likely cause if your sore throat following high dose antibiotics, is a fungal overgrowth in the pharynx, because the antibiotic has probably been very effective in killing the commensal bugs in the throat allowing the fungi to dominate. A 10-day course of any anti-fungal will do. Must be oral and not topical t ...Read more
I'm allergic to everything but cipro (ciprofloxacin) and levaquin just got off 10 days of levaquin for strep didn't help sore throat time. Have it back what can I take?
Virus, not strep?: The large majority of pharyngitis (sore throat) is viral, and no antibiotic works against viruses. Lack of improvement on levofloxacin (Levaquin®) is evidence it wasn't strep to begin with, or that it was strep plus a virus. This should continue to clear up on its own. Check with your doctor if it continues more than another few days. ...Read more
After taking levaquin (levofloxacin) for 10 days I'm still sick with sore throat and nausea fatigue lost my voice tested negative for strep. Could this be mono?
Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for strep: It'll likely take care of the infection but it's not recommended as first or even second line use. There are reports of increasing resistance of group a strep to fluoroquinolones (cipro). Penicillin is still the first choice and macrolides for people with penicillin allergy (or cephalosporins depending on local resistance). ...Read more
Seldom used: When we used this years ago we used the CR to give enough quick acting to start the healing backed up with the long acting to maintain an antibiotic level for 10 days. The LA doesn't. Few patients were interested in the 2 large shots, one in each leg, that it takes to treat the average adult or older kid. Oral meds are as effective and better accepted. ...Read more
Depends/works: For the average adult, the amount needed would require a load into both rear ends at the same session. There is too much volume to put in an arm shot or one bottom. Though this was once a preferred method (docs) to assure completion of treatment, it is not as common now as it used to be. ...Read more

Clindamycin to treat strep throat I was prescribed 300 mg 1 tab 3 times daily and it says to take it until it is gone but I feel this is a lot?
Clindamycin: It is unclear why you were prescribed Clindamycin for uncomplicated strep throat. Penicillin would have been perfectly adequate. Either you were allergic to penicillins, or something else was going on. The dose you were given is not inappropriate, but you do not say how many you were given. Why not call the doctor who gave you this and ask the same question? ...Read more
I am allergic to every antibiotic I've had. Strep throat is going around and I'm worried I am going to get it. Can I be treated if I get strep throat?
Hard to say: You didn't list the antibiotics or what makes you think it was an allergic reaction. Many adults who have had spots or other reactions after an antibiotic but allergy testing proves they are not allergic. You should find out. Many meds can treat strep. Although you can feel better after strep without antibiotics, you remain at risk for rheumatic fever & passing it to others. ...Read more

Depends: In the short term, most untreated patients will gradually feel better & return to a stable state of health. An estimated 1/200 will develop rheumatic fever and associated heart disease, kidney or brain impairments. Some of these will eventually die from complications if untreated. They also pass this & the risk on to others. If you relish infecting your family/friends roll the dice. I'd get treated ...Read more

Self treatment: First you have to have access to culture material to make the diagnosis. Second, you have to have access to antibiotics. Then again, you can use symptomatic care by gargling with any variety of substances, take either Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain and hope that you don't develop acute rheumatic fever, glomerulonephritis, or chorea in three to four weeks. ...Read more
