Part of their critical functions include the excretion of urine and removal of nitrogenous wastes products from the blood. They regulate acid-base, electrolyte, fluid balance and blood pressure. Through hormonal signals, the kidneys control the ...Read more
Needs to evaluate:
It is not uncommon to find a condition called vesico ureteral reflux or a narrowing of the drainage portion of the kidney as it meets the ureter or so called upj stenosis.
Both of these would require a pediatric urology opinion.
In the great majority of cases medical treatment and observation over time is all that is required. ...Read more

What does thickening of kidney tissue mean in a 20 week fetus one md says DS the other says it means it's developing. What's your thought?
Here are some...: To save your time and avoid unnecessary worry & anxiety, it would be most beneficial to refer this question to your OB-doc who ordered the test. To interpret prenatal US of a fetus, it is good idea to correlate with your overall clinical picture and other parts of the fetus; at times, a second US in 6-8 weeks may be needed for comparison and deduction of the related clinical consistency. So, ask d ...Read more

I'm 29 weeks I went to have a ultrasound done & he said my daughter dilated that one kidney bigger than the other. What does it mean?
Perhaps nothing: A dilated kidney on us can indicate a blockage in the ureter from the kidney as well as damage to the kidney. More often than not, however, this is a finding that resolves on its'own over time. It is the cost of of technology--finding things that may ultimately be of no significance. Serial ultrasounds will clarify this. ...Read more

I had one more quick question. If bun 25, creatinine 1.5, bun/creat ratio 17, egfr 58...The egfr means im in stage 3 CKD right? 58% kidney function?
Stage 3 CKD: You are correct in that your estimated GFR of 58 ml/min puts you into stage 3 chronic kidney disease. Remember, your GFR is estimated. The actual result may be greater, or lower, than the egfr. To get your acutal gfr, have a 24 hour urine for creatinine clearance. Ask the physician who orders this test to have proteinuria (p) assess in that sample. If p is present, it may needed to be treated. ...Read more
Hi I only have one kidney hydronephritis cyst and stone in the remaining. Mag3 scan I was not given Lasix (furosemide) does that mean there is no obstruction?
Several meanings: Several reasons for not receiving Lasix (furosemide) during mag3 scan. The first reason is that there was no stasis in kidney and Lasix (furosemide) was not necessary to prove presence or lack of kidney obstruction. Another reason is that function of remaining kidney was so impaired that Lasix (furosemide) was not going to offer any additional information. You should ask your doctor for clarification of study results. ...Read more

I: I have heard this term used with fetal ultrasounds - (pyelectasis) which means that there can be dilation of the central part of the kidney. I will change this from unspecified specialty to diagostic radiologist, to get a better chance of getting exact info. I suggest that you ask your doctor what he specifically meant whe using the term "full kidney". ...Read more

Can EPO abuse stop the kidneys from producing their own EPO once drug use is ended I've read plenty of research about erythropoietin abuse by athletes, and there is consensus that one of the big risks is polycythemia and the possibility of strokes, hypert
