Kidney (Definition)

The kidneys are paired organs that lie on either side of the vertebral column. Part of their critical functions include the excretion of urine and removal of nitrogenous wastes products from the blood. They regulate acid-base, electrolyte, fluid balance and blood pressure. Through hormonal signals, the kidneys control the ...Read more

One of my baby's kidneys showed dilation. What does that mean?

One of my baby's kidneys showed dilation. What does that mean?

Needs to evaluate: It is not uncommon to find a condition called vesico ureteral reflux or a narrowing of the drainage portion of the kidney as it meets the ureter or so called upj stenosis. Both of these would require a pediatric urology opinion. In the great majority of cases medical treatment and observation over time is all that is required.

Does a CT scan that shows dialation in one of the kidneys mean cancer?

Does a CT scan that shows dialation in one of the kidneys mean cancer?

Not necessarily: Dilation is a reflection of obstruction which may be due to a cancer or a benign tumor/polyp, a small stone, or a scarring of ureter.

What does thickening of kidney tissue mean in a 20 week fetus one md says DS the other says it means it's developing. What's your thought?

What does thickening of kidney tissue mean in a 20 week fetus one md says DS the other says it means it's developing. What's your thought?

Here are some...: To save your time and avoid unnecessary worry & anxiety, it would be most beneficial to refer this question to your OB-doc who ordered the test. To interpret prenatal US of a fetus, it is good idea to correct with your overall clinical picture and other parts of the fetus; at times, a second US in 6-8 weeks may be needed for comparison and deduction of the related clinical consistency. So, ask doc

Is taking cucumber bad while one is suffering from kidney disease. I mean renel tubular ascidoses.

OK: Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) happens when there is impaired reabsorption of bicarbonate and/or impaired acidification by the kidneys. One way to treat RTA is to give alkaline substances (sodium bicarbonate). Cucumbers are considered high alkaline forming foods and should be ok to consume if you have rta.

I'm 29 weeks I went to have a ultrasound done & he said my daughter dilated that one kidney bigger than the other. What does it mean?

I'm 29 weeks I went to have a ultrasound done & he said my daughter dilated that one kidney bigger than the other. What does it mean?

Perhaps nothing: A dilated kidney on us can indicate a blockage in the ureter from the kidney as well as damage to the kidney. More often than not, however, this is a finding that resolves on its'own over time. It is the cost of of technology--finding things that may ultimately be of no significance. Serial ultrasounds will clarify this.

I had one more quick question. If bun 25, creatinine 1.5, bun/creat ratio 17, egfr 58...The egfr means im in stage 3 CKD right? 58% kidney function?

I had one more quick question. If bun 25, creatinine 1.5, bun/creat ratio 17, egfr 58...The egfr means im in stage 3 CKD right? 58% kidney function?

Stage 3 CKD: You are correct in that your estimated GFR of 58 ml/min puts you into stage 3 chronic kidney disease. Remember, your GFR is estimated. The actual result may be greater, or lower, than the egfr. To get your acutal gfr, have a 24 hour urine for creatinine clearance. Ask the physician who orders this test to have proteinuria (p) assess in that sample. If p is present, it may needed to be treated.

Hi I only have one kidney hydronephritis cyst and stone in the remaining. Mag3 scan I was not given Lasix (furosemide) does that mean there is no obstruction?

Hi I only have one kidney hydronephritis cyst and stone in the remaining. Mag3 scan I was not given Lasix (furosemide) does that mean there is no obstruction?

Several meanings: Several reasons for not receiving Lasix (furosemide) during mag3 scan. The first reason is that there was no stasis in kidney and Lasix (furosemide) was not necessary to prove presence or lack of kidney obstruction. Another reason is that function of remaining kidney was so impaired that Lasix (furosemide) was not going to offer any additional information. You should ask your doctor for clarification of study results.

I: I have heard this term used with fetal ultrasounds - (pyelectasis) which means that there can be dilation of the central part of the kidney. I will change this from unspecified specialty to diagostic radiologist, to get a better chance of getting exact info. I suggest that you ask your doctor what he specifically meant whe using the term "full kidney".

What does it mean if my right kidney hurts and my left one hurts sometimes? I also have foamy and dark urine. And I have sharp heart pain occasionally

What does it mean if my right kidney hurts and my left one hurts sometimes? I also have foamy and dark urine. And I have sharp heart pain occasionally

Its quite: UNUSUAL to feel "Kidney Pain" unless infected or otherwise abnormal (obstruction, stones, etc) "Foamy and Dark" are very NON-SPECIFIC appearances for urine! @ The sharp "heart pain" is most likely NOT from your heart....people don't describe cardiac pain as pain "in or from" their hearts THUS:" YOU NEED A VISIT TO YOUR PCP (Primary Care Provider) with whom you should discuss these concerns! Will staying adequately hydrated greatly reduce risk of developing a kidney stone? How big a factor does genetics play? I'm terrified of getting one

Will staying adequately hydrated greatly reduce risk of developing a kidney stone? How big a factor does genetics play? I'm terrified of getting one

Kidney stones: 43 M asks about hydra trio and kidney stones and genetics. ANS: depends on the kind of stones. Some strongly inherited. Look at your family tree. No stones worry less. Tests in stone formers on hydration decreasing stones are not strongly positive. But those who live in hot dry areas more likely too get stones.

Can EPO abuse stop the kidneys from producing their own EPO once drug use is ended I've read plenty of research about erythropoietin abuse by athletes, and there is consensus that one of the big risks is polycythemia and the possibility of strokes, hypert

Yes,: Yes, once exogenously administered erythropoietin is stopped, assuming that the patient's kidneys are normal (where erythropoietin is primarily made), they should resume making erythropoietin on their own. Erythropoietin also known as epo, is a hormone that controls erythropoiesis, or red blood cell production.

What could clear tissue in urine mean? 74 yr old with one kidney removed due to cancer as well as bladder infections.

What could clear tissue in urine mean? 74 yr old with one kidney removed due to cancer as well as bladder infections.

Not sure what: Clear tissue may mean, but it is time to get a urne analysis and some blood work, and then decision about imaging or cystoscopy. You did not say if it was the kidney, its pelvis or ureter that was cancer. I would definitely call or visit your urologist.

Blood in urine: Blood in the urine is not normal and should be evaluated. Possible causes include infection, stones, blood disorders, trauma. Your doctor can help sort this out. If the urine specimen was collects during your menses, it should be repeated when your menses is over.
