Does Iron Cause Constipation In Babies

Anemic and taking OTC 325mg Iron. Is there any way to tell if my iron level is up before next exam? Does constipation mean it is working? yes or no???
How do you FEEL?: If your anemia is caused by iron deficiency, this WILL help. If not, it will not help. Iron turns everybody's stool black and upsets the gut some; constipation is common. If you are iron deficient, you need to find out why -- heavy monthly loss, ill-advised vegetarianism, bleeding stomach ulcer, hookworm, tumor. Glad you're taking a proactive approach to your health. ...Read more

Define "anemia": There are many types of anemias. Iron deficiency is but one kind. Only iron deficiency responds to treatment with iron supplements. The other anemias do not. If there is iron deficiency in a 73 year old male alcoholic there is blood loss, probably from GI tract. There may be prolonged prothrombin time, low platelets, nutritional deficiencies, etc. Iron deficiency is not a diagnosis per se. ...Read more
I've got very low iron levels and recently being treated for ulcers. I've been constipated for 2 mnths now. Do u think its related to any of the two?
Constipation: Although iron deficiency does not cause constipation per se, iron supplements can cause constipation at times. If you are having this side effect, try increasing the fiber in your diet and maybe even taking a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil, with extra water. If this does not help, then switching to a different fiber supplement may be useful. Good luck. ...Read more

I heard my 22 month old may be drinking too much milk? He drinks 36 oz day .He has a healthy weight, and iron count, and does not get constipated. Not sure if I should limit his milk consumption?
I certainly would: I recommend milk consumption limited to a maximum of 24 oz a day, because of high risk of iron deficiency associated with higher milk consumption. As you know the regular homogenized milk has very low iron content, and excessive milk intake satisfies small toddlers' hunger so that they tend not to eat other healthy foods. I also would ask his doctor to run a test called ferritin. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Injectible iron: You're a grown-up now with some serious health problems including Graves's disease. It is extremely difficult for a vegan to enough iron & several other nutrients, and I would urge you to reconsider your involvement with this diet or at least to find a vegan-friendly physician to guide you.
