Does Inositol Cause Ocd To Be Worse
Would inositol make ocd/anxiety worse before it gets better? Kind of like SSRI's do. Also is inositol really effective for ocd?
Somewhat: Like most other b vitamins, they CAN have a postive effect on mood disorders, but not as effective as drug therapy. ...Read more
Can I use vitamine B8 (inositol) as alternative to prozac (fluoxetine) for OCD treatment cause I belive prozac (fluoxetine) has side effects. Which I don't like. With thanks?
Consult psychiatrist: Hi there. I am a paychologist, medication is not my specialty. Having worked with many clients with OCD, I would strongly suggest that you consult with a psychiatrist to describe your symptoms, provide a thorough history, and express your concerns. The psychiatrist should be able to guide you. I usually find a combination of therapy and medication works best. ...Read more
Probably 12 g daily: An increase in inositol in the brain seems to be one of the outcomes of ssri treatment, so it's sensible to consider what might happen if one simply takes inositol. Studies have shown that it seems to work like the ssris. One study found that 6 g a day helped with depression, though 12 g were required in a double-blind study. Sometimes it's difficult to tolerate because of flatulence and cramps. ...Read more
The right dose: Inositol, one of the B vitamins, is not formally indicated for the treatment of OCD and has some interactions, including one with Lithium, that can be dangerous. The literature suggests that between 2 and 18 gm/day in divided doses can be effective. You should definitely talk with your health care provider before starting an inositol titration. ...Read more
Yes: While there is some evidence that ocd can respond to inositol, the evidence is not as strong as the evidence for ssri's (like zoloft, prozac, paxil (paroxetine)...). However, I do not know you dose without knowing how much medicine is in a teaspoon. You should be on 2000 mg of inositol so check how much is in a teaspoon. ...Read more

A healthy life style helps, too. ...Read more

Not really: You're looking at OCD a bit backwards. The behaviors are symptoms of the disorder, not caused by the disorder. For you one of your compulsive behaviors may be self-stimulation, a nice way to say masturbation. It could just as easily be washing hands 100 times a day, or changing your shoes every 5 minutes. Since this is an anxiety disorder, sexual symptoms /behaviors may indicate problems there ...Read more
OCD does not cause: masturbation or anything else. It can get your attention so focused on any behavior that you start doing that compulsively to ward off imagined dangers, most of which one cannot even name. Thus one can count objects, walk a certain way, etc. But it is the symptom, not the cause. Please see a mental health professional who specializes in OCD for support. Not directly: Obviously, having severe OCD symptoms can be discouraging or even depressing, but mood changes are not an inherent part of ocd. When depression sometimes coincides with OCD — and it does somewhat more than chance would suggest — it is diagnosed separately.
