Why is the blood supply screened for syphilis when syphilis is not transmitted via infected blood?
Blood can transmit: Blood contact very rarely can transmit syphilis. It probably requires much more blood than possible during sexual exposure, shared needles, etc, but transfusion can do it, especially with non-refrigerated blood products. It's extremely rare and even without testing, probably there would be few if any cases, at least in the US. OTOH, testing is easy, cheap, and ingrained by history and habit. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is annual STD screening frequent enough to catch potentially asymptomatic STDs (like syphilis) in a timely manner for their treatment? (Not high risk)
Autoimmune: No test is perfect. Every test has a false positive and false negative rate. Any condition that leads to lots of antibody production, like autoimmune diseases, can lead to false positive tests. In hcv, antibody response is not as important as viral load since about 25% of people will be truly infected but clear it themselves. Everyone with hcv antibodies needs an hcv RNA test for active infection. ...Read more

In a good way; no: Glutathione is unlikely to have any affect on the red cell count but may improve one's white cell count if it is abnormal as it supports immune function. As a substance that boosts immunity and supports detoxification it is likely to reduce risk of all cancers; there is no evidence that glutathione can cause any type of cancer. Would huntingtons disease affect any other blood tests? ( cause abnormal blood results for anything)
