Allergies/asthma: The symptoms you describe sound like they might be caused by allergies to something in your indoor or outdoor environment (pollens, dust, grass, pet fur/dander, etc). You might also have some reactive airway disease exacerbated by the same. Examine your environment for potential allergens and try to eliminate exposure to them. If this does not resolve, seek further medical evaluation/treatment. ...Read more

I take 20 MSG of lexapro (escitalopram) a day I have a really sore throat can I take aspirin, Advil ?
Usually ok: If your child doesn't have an allergy to motrin, it should be safe to give this medication. Make sure that you follow the instructions for dosing and duration of use until you should talk to the pediatrician. If the child is showing signs of serious illness like extreme low energy, too much sleeping or high fevers, call the pediatrician immediately. ...Read more

Sore throat, lethargy, x3 days. ok to breathe/swallow,neg strep & xray, fast pulse. ER gave steroids & motrin for visible epiglottis. Should i worry?
Sore throat: I'm not sure how they saw your epiglottis in the ER, but if they think you have epiglottitis, you should have been hospitalized. Do you have fever? you are likely dehydrating which may cause the fast pulse. Strep is only one test. Were you tested for infectious mono? if there is suspicion of epiglottitis (low prob given no dyspnea or dysphagia) I would suggest coverage for HIB. See your PCP. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I get a sore throat every day. Slight nasal congestion and raspy voice. Swollen glands too. Advil helps, but it comes back.. Any suggestions?
See your ENT: You have some sort of chronic problem, but it is hard to know what is going on over the computer. Most likely you are dealing with allergies, chronic sinusitis, or perhaps laryngeal reflux. A thorough history, physical exam and maybe some x-rays or other tests will help sort out the problem. Sinus rinses are a helpful solution for sinus congestion and allergy complaints as well. Good luck! ...Read more
I have an ear ache, fever, sore throat with trouble swallowing, and stuffy nose. I've been taking motrin, nyquil, and vitamin c. Nothing really helps.
Cold: It can be a simple cold, but it sounds like it's time for an examination. There is a possibility of an ear infection, but these symptoms can also result from a simple virus infection. Don't be in a rush to get antibiotics if your doctor feels they're not warranted. Motrin, nyquil & vitamin c sound fine otherwise. Plenty of water, also. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My illness started with a bad headache and a sore throat. After two days of taking Advil, my headache went away but my sore throat stayed and red, pimple-like bumps were forming all over my hands, feet, and face. Is there a way to cure this?
Doctor can check: A sore throat can be evaluated by a primary care doctor to see what the cause might be. Sometimes it is a strep throat bacterial infection (antibiotics would be needed to treat strep). Other possibilities include viral infections such as Hand-Foot-Mouth disease or Mononucleosis (mono), a tonsillar abcess, throat ulcers, etc... The doctor has to look at the throat and rash to figure things out. ...Read more

Doctor can examine: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep). Some throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can decrease pain. ...Read more

Herbal medicines: Presuming this is an acute sore throat, these are usually viral & thus antibiotics won't help (if you have a fever and fairly swollen glands it could be strep or another bacterial infection, which can be helped by antibiotics). My favorite treatments for sore throats are herbs, especially pelargonium sidoides & andrographis. Propolis, made by bees, also helps.
