Can i exercise with aortic aneurysm? My father is in his 70's and had a slight aortic aneurysm. He wants to start exercising in the gym, but i'm concerned it may be dangerous. Are there any particular machines or exercises he should avoid?

Your : Your father should avoid activities that raise the blood pressure excessively. Heavy weight lifting should be avoided at all costs, and he should focus on light aerobic activity such as briskly walking on a treadmill. A good rule of thumb is to exercise just enough to break a light sweat while maintaining the ability to carry on a conversation. I would recommend that he have an exercise stress test with a cardiologist to assess his blood pressure response to exercise and to help develop an exercise prescription. Any chest, back or abdominal pain or pressure with exercise should be taken very seriously and prompt immediate medical attention. ...Read more

Can a fetus develope any kind of damage by someone shaking your stomach? Or am i just being over protective?

Can a fetus develope any kind of damage by someone shaking your stomach? Or am i just being over protective?

Very unlikely: Your baby is very well protected, by your abdominal wall, the wall of the uterus and the fluid around the baby. It would take a lot of force to injure the baby and such force would also injure you. Shaking won't do it. No worries. ...Read more

Can a doctor recommend that somebody stop driving? My father-in-law recently lost consciousness while driving. If not for the quick reaction of his wife, they would have plowed into a power line. This occurred on a holiday, or he likely would have struck

Can a doctor recommend that somebody stop driving? My father-in-law recently lost consciousness while driving. If not for the quick reaction of his wife, they would have plowed into a power line. This occurred on a holiday, or he likely would have struck

This : This is an excellent question. It piqued my interest, since this very subject came up in the risk management department of one of my hospitals. To answer your question the way you asked it, absolutely, his doctor most certainly can "recommend" that he surrender his divers license. What he can't do is notify the dmv about him, as this would constitute a breach of patient confidentiality. Unless dad gives his doctor written permission to discuss his medical condition with the state of california, his doctor is prohibited from notifying the state of a potentially dangerous situation, for both dad and the public. Personally, i would like to see an exception made whereby a doctor has the ability to make such a notification if it involves public safety. So far, there is no such exception. If dad is able to pass the dmv tests, then the state of california has made its decision. (the corollary to this is if dad were to injure someone while driving, the injured party is unable to sue his doctor for not reporting this.) keep in mind, dad's doctor may have the best ability to diagnose and treat his medical conditions, but doctors are not trained or qualified to determine who is able to drive. Clearly, the best thing for you to do is to try your best to persuade dad to stop driving. Many old people feel that driving gives them a sense of independence, and are unwilling to give that up. You will need a compelling argument, presented in a kind, concerned way, that he'd be most apt to agree with. Perhaps offering to be available to drive him where he likes or needs to go without exception would be a helpful start? I've attached a link about this, that also contains related information, showing how much money can be saved by giving up one's drivers license. I wish you luck. ...Read more

I'm wondering what is the harm if a waiter/waitress was talking and happened to get their spit from talking into a drink?

I'm wondering what is the harm if a waiter/waitress was talking and happened to get their spit from talking into a drink?

Harm is unlikely: While spit contains a number of potentially nasty organisms, there are many reasons it would be unlikely to be of harm. It is diluted in a drink and especially if the drink contains alcohol, that will neutralize most harmful organisms. Next stop is the stomach, highly acid and able to kill almost anything else. The only thing that might escape all of this would be tb. ...Read more

What is e reasons for frequent giddiness especially after a chiropratic session on my shoulder n neck? Please advise. Thank you.

STOP NOW: Chiropractic adjustments can cause spinal cord damage, ruptured discs, and blood vessel damage in the neck. The high velocity, high amplitude neck maneuvers, performed by a non-physician, without safe precautionary examinations may cause a temporary vertebral artery compression at the foramen transversarum in the neck, but if it creates a dissection, you are at risk of stroke. See your md or do. ...Read more

What would be the thing to do if a child has sudden cardiac arrest while playing a sport on the field?

What would be the thing to do if a child has sudden cardiac arrest while playing a sport on the field?

CPR...: If anyone, including a child, has a sudden cardiac arrest, 911 should be immediately called and CPR initiated. The 911 operators can talk you through it if you are untrained. An automatic external defibrillator, or aed, should be applied according to the directions if one is available. This device will deliver a "shock" to the heart, if warranted. This can all be life-saving. ...Read more

There is an employee who does not bath. We share a seat in a truck and i've developed a cough and scratchy throat. I need health risk info to give bos?

Can't say: I am not aware of any published cases of health problems from being exposed to body odor. I do not think you should need "health information" - lack of good personal hygiene should be an issue for your boss, other employees and any of the public who this employee interacts with. You may have some kind of allergy, though. You would need to see your doctor to evaluate this and give you a note. ...Read more
