If a mother has a history of genital herpes, what are the odds of a baby having birth defects both for c-section and vaginal birth?
Varies: Birth defects are not an issue with maternal herpes. The baby is at risk of a severe infection from the germ. The risk period begins with the opening of the bag of waters if mom is actively shedding the virus during a recognized or silent outbreak. The germ can travel into babies system & lay dormant for a while or immediately cause infection. A c-section before labor starts can avoid the risk.See 1 more doctor answer

If I was exposed to genital herpes, would stressing and worrying about it cause me to have an outbreak?
No: Stress is usually related to repeat outbreaks, not new infections. New infections from exposure usually has more to do with current health status and immune status. After first outbreak, stress, illness and sunburn seem to incite outbreaks. Men usually have apparent outbreaks that are visible. It is possible for a woman to have a non visible internal cervical herpes outbreak.
Yes: Genital herpes can be problematic for pregnant women because of the possibility of vertical transmission during vaginal delivery. This is why women with vaginal herpes outbreaks require c-sections, and suppressive therapy around the time of delivery is used to prevent outbreaks. Neonatal herpes can lead to infection to the baby's skin, eyes, mouth, or central nervous system.See 1 more doctor answer
