Doctor insights on:
Does Estrogen Dominance Cause Acne
Estrogen and Acne: Acne happens when androgens such as testosterone gets turned into its more potent form called Dht through the action of the enzyme called 5 Alpha retuctase. Dht in the skin then cause sebum production to increase, leading to more oily skin, which clogs pores and results in acne. When your Progesterone levels are normal, this will help to keep your Dht levels down.
Why does low progesterone or estrogen dominance cause acne in women with pcos? How does that happen?
Hyperandrogenism: Acne in women with pcos is caused by hyperandrogenism (too much male-type hormones) including testosterone, produced by the ovaries. Insulin resistance promotes hyperandrogenism. Treatments include Insulin sensitizers like metformin if you're trying to conceive, or birth control pills and anti-androgens like spironolactone if not ttc. 'low progesterone' occurs in women with pcos who don't ovulate.
Do I have estrogen dominance? I have pcos, acne, high fsh, normal testosterone and slightly high androstenedione.
Unsure: First of all if you have a high fsh value that is not consistent with pcos. That would be more indicative of ovarian failure. So first you need to make sure you have the correct diagnosis. But in general with pcos most women have symptoms from male hormone dominance, but since ovulation does not occur regularly, the uterus has estrogen dominance.
Can progesterone pills be taken instead of an estrogen-drospirenone bcp like yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) to treat estrogen dominance and acne in a skinny girl with pcos?
Yes: But also, you have excessive androgens. Ask your doctor to give alda tone, an androgen antagonist.
I was wounding if higher testosterone levels in women cause acne? If so what can I do to lower my testosterone and increase my estrogen levels?
Yes and no: High testosterone levels can certainly make acne worse. However, if tests show abnormally high levels of testosterone, you need to rule out cancer as a cause. Most of the time, testosterone levels are within the normal range, but hormonal therapy may still be appropriate. Certain oral contraceptives can reduce the production of testosterone and reduce its effects.See 1 more doctor answer
Will birth control with a higher estrogen and lower androgen potency such as levora (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) cause acne?
Sometimes: Yes, sometimes this can happen. Each woman reacts differently to oral contraceptives.See 1 more doctor answer
I am a 45 year old female that is experiencing severe cystic acne on my chin with acne on my forehead. Labs show low testosterone with normal estrogen and progesterone. Will testosterone help or cause more acne.
Typically: Typically testosterone is going to increase not decrease your acne problems. This is why young male teenagers become acne prone during early teen years with puberty. I would suggest meeting with a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon for a full evaluation. Good luck!See 2 more doctor answers
Estrogen is 23 and prog. 5, FSH 6, testos normal, but LH is 14. Lh always problem. Will minipill help? Will it overload my prog? Acne big problem.
Classic PCOS: Your labs are classic pcos labs. The Progesterone shows no recent ovulation, the estrogen shows some active small follicles in the ovary. The fsh shows that estrogen is adequate. The lh show your body is trying to ovulate, but the low Progesterone shows it has not ovulated. A combination birth control pill would be better at lowing the testosterone and protecting the uterus.
A bcp with more estrogen helps my acne but a bcp with less estrogen worsens it. Both have the same amount of drospirenone. I have low progesterone.
Interesting, paradox: It does seem counterintuitive, since higher estrogen levels are typically thought to worsen acne.Actually estrogen deficiency can cause acne in some pts (if you think about it like this: if your testosterone is slightly high, then you may need a bit more estrogen to balance out that effect, per se).Low p4 is normal except after ovulation.Ocs will suppress all ur nl hormone production. Usewhatworks.
I had a lof of acne on my face and back. Dr checked my pcod and he said you should use estrogen peels for 12 month. Do you think it work and never back?
See someone else: Acne is serious business especially now that you're almost a grown woman. Anyone who promises that a year of acne treatment will give a permanent remission doesn't know acne. There is no telling when it will remit, and even a rough course of Isotretinoin can be followed by recurrence after a few years. Disease on the trunk requires both topical and systemic rx at least for some time.
What are the possible side effects of switching from yaz to yasmin? Being it's. 02 to. 03 mg of estrogen? Will my cycles and acne be better or worse?
0.02 t0 0.03 mg Est: If anything is noticed, is should be that the higher estrogen level will allow for less facial acne. It may only improve the acne and not "cure it". Make certain to take the Yasmin the same time (within the hour of the day before) so that the level of estrogen in your system is constant. Taking the bcp at odd hours in low dose types like Yas or Yasmin is, can cause variations which cause acne.
I had acne and hair on my body for years doesn't matter how much I shower or shave could my testosterone levels be higher then my estrogen?
Possibly: Yes, you could have some abnormalities in your hormones like polycystic ovary syndrome or adrenal hyperplasia. I'd make an appointment with your physician to discuss this.
