Does Ekg Show Heart Failure
Electrocardiogram (ecg, ekg) is a print-out of the electrical forces detected by electrodes on the chest wall, as electricity travels through the heart with each heart beat. The electrodes are placed in different positions, and each position "sees" the electrical activity of the heart from its own vantage point. Abnormalities in signal detected at chest surface ...Read more
I had 2 EKG & 2 blood & 1 xray work done 2 different times. I'm very short of breath when I lay down would those test show heart failure or enlargment?
Echocardiogram: An ekg can demonstrate heart rhythm and enlargement of the heart chambers but cannot detect congestive heart failure. An echocardiogram will show the status of the heart muscle strength or weakness as well as size of the chambers and status of the heart valves. A chest xray will show more advanced heart failure. Your md has this information and can advise you best. ...Read more
Would heart failure show up on an ekg? I have had a lot of shortness of breath and sinus tachycardia that has gotten worse during my pregnancy! Worried
No: Heart failure is a clinical diagnosis. The classic, accepted definition of heart failure is heart disease that limits the cardiovascular system to delivery adequate oxygen to meet the body's demands/needs. There are many heart diseases that can cause heart failure. An ECG may provide a clue to the diagnosis of several of those diseases. ...Read more
Would an EKG detect heart failure? And if my EKG came back completely normal would that mean I am not having heart failure?
It can give clues: Heart failure is a complicated diagnosis to make and is usually based on history and physical exam findings. An ekg may give clues that point towards a diagnosis of heart failure but can not fully diagnose it. You may be confusing the term heart failure with heart disease. Ask you doctor about further specifics. ...Read more

Dr prescribed propranolol for anxiety. I know it slows heart rate and has an ADR of heart failure. Should I be worried about taking it? Clean EKG etc.
My mom is 72 years old she has diabetes congestive heart failure her EKG came back with fluid and heart enlarged. How should we proceed?
What are the symptoms and tests for diastolic heart failure? My EKG is irregular, echo seemed okay, I was told I have a sinus tach from a reg place.
Confused: Hello, again, undiagnosed1! diastolic heart failure is present when heart failure is confirmed (by symptoms, chest x-ray, and sometimes b-natriuretic peptide measurement (bnp)) in the presence of normal systolic function (ejection fraction>55%). Sinus tach is a regular rhythm so if your ekg is irregular, you have something else or in addition to sinus tach. ...Read more
My recent EKG reads sinus brady with 1st degree AV Block incomplete right bundle branch block. Am I at a greater risk for heart failure or a fib?
Correct: AllButBrady: Are c/w damaged muscle cells, most commonly from blood supply issues (artery disease, by US autopsy studies >8 decades, present 1/2 population by age 7), arteries enlarge, not narrow, thus not clinically apparent for decades until vulnerable plaques rupture releasing WBCs triggering clots & blood flow to capillaries blocked. Same issue underlying atrial fib. All issues missed by conventional tests ...Read more
My ESR level is 2. I am concerned about congestive heart failure. I have had an EKG and chest x ray, both okay. Is heart failure still a possibility?
ESR is normal:
Although people talk about congestive heart failure being associated with a low ESR (sed rate), there typically is not really a sed rate that is abnormally low. A normal ESR for a young woman, in most labs, is 0-20 mm/hr. The finding of an ESR of 2 should not warrant a heart failure evaluation.
If you have no symptoms of heart failure, don't worry. ...Read more

Swelling in my fingers in morning, gurgling in chest, fatigue. Ekg, blood work, doc listened to lungs and heart all was fine. Could this be heart failure?
Gurgling in chest: Failure of esophageal sphincter or esophageal dysmotility could cause gugling sounds in the chest. Swelling of fingers could be sclerodactyly. Therse featutres we could see in crest syndrome. Your physician could consider this indifferential diagnosis. There are other reasons too. ...Read more
Had chest x ray and blood work and ekg 1 month ago. All normal. Now have developed pitting edema in legs and ankles. Could this be heart failure?
Not exactly: Heart failure is a clinical syndrome that entails either lung symptoms (shortness of breath, cough, difficulty lying flat) or peripheral symptoms (lower extremity swelling) that are caused by one of a number of heart conditions. So good old fashioned history and physical exam are best. Having said that, depending on the specific cause of heart failure, the ECG may provide corroborating evidence. ...Read more
No: Heart failure is a clinical diagnosis - you have certain symptoms, such as shortness of breath and easy fatigue-ability, and if they are connected to abnormal heart function you may be diagnosed with heart failure. An ECG usually discloses underlying heart rhythm disturbances or the presence of coronary artery blockages, though much more can be detected. ...Read more

Would myocarditis or heart failure show up immediately after Rheumatic Fever if heart was affected?
Does an echo and short stress test show if I have a bad heart or heart failure? I'm 18 male. Scared to excercise because my rest BPM is 120
Heart tests: An echo shows if your heart is enlarged or if wall muscle is damaged or if the valves are not functioning right. Stress test checks for blockage in blood vessels to the heart. Sounds like you may need a holter monitor to check the rhythm and then treatment of your elevated rhythm and thyroid tests to rule out over active thyroid. Best wishes. ...Read more
Can a biventricular icd reading show if heart failure is worse in someone with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy? What would it show?
ICD: A biv icd is therapy for heart failure and poor left ventricular function. One of the types on the market has an impedance device in it which can predict changes in fluid status. All biv icds do not have this particular technology. Changes in chest impedance can indicate changes in fluid volumes in the chest and heart failure status. ...Read more
Holter shows 17, 000 pvcs. Ep says do nothing, meds, or ablation. Father of 2, now scared about future heart failure/surgery. Should I be worried?
VPCs: Vpcs have many possible causes and meanings. Many times they do not need to be treated even if very frequent. The ep physicians are specialists in rhythm and should be well qualified to judge whether treatment is indicated. You should discuss with the ep and ask for explanation and if needed reassurance as the ep has the most information about you. ...Read more
Will a cardiac mri/mra show congested heart failure, blocked arteries, etc? What all will it show?
Wouldn't a echocardiogram show early heart failure? Also wouldn't a stethoscope and chest X-ray show copd?
No...: An echocardiogram will not show the fluid in the lungs so it will not diagnose early heart failure. Copd, by definition, has chronic airways obstruction which is diagnosed via pulmonary function testing. This is the only way to differentiate COPD from asthma, both of which can give the same stethoscope and x-ray findings. ...Read more

The signs are elevated jugular venous pressure, rales in lungs, liver enlargement, and pitting edema. The objective tests are BNP blood test and chest Xray. The tests you mention may indicate heart problems but they do not diagnose heart failure. ...Read more
Does BP 120/70 for 57+ yr female (on 'Olmezest 20') indicate any post cardiac issue (e.g. heart failure etc)?
Need the whole story: A blood pressure reading of 120/70 (especially if a one-time reading) has no special meaning by itself, because it happens in normal healthy people, in people with "mild" diseases, in people with "serious" diseases, in people with heart problems, and in people with no heart problems. The only way to tell is to get the whole picture of what is happening with a particular patient. ...Read more
Physical exam: Fluid accumulates during congestive heart failure. When the right side of the heart fails, fluid accumulates in the legs and abdomen. Heart failure is a complex set of conditions in which the heart "fails" to pump a normal amount of blood with each beat.
