For how long does Effexor (venlafaxine) cause insomnia?

For how long does Effexor (venlafaxine) cause insomnia?

Short term: There are at least three effects that venlafaxine (effexor) has on sleep - it has a short term effect increasing agitation and insomnia that lasts usually only a few days, it has a long term effect improving sleep by treating depression (which has a big negative effect on sleep), and it has a small long term effect reducing rem or dream sleep. For most people #2 is the most important.

Does Effexor (venlafaxine) cause Insomnia? I have been on it for 7 months and just recently cannot sleep at night. Also does it increase blood pressure?

Effexor (venlafaxine) side effects: Yes to both. Consider lower dose for insomnia. Suggest you see your doctor to get your bp checked. If it's higher than usual for you, discuss with prescribing doc to discontinue this med. Had this happen once with a patient who's pcp thought higher bp was from 'stress.' I knew Effexor (venlafaxine) could increase bp. Pcp and I agreed to stop the med and her bp dropped to normal. I hope this helps. Best wishes.

I'm still taking seroquel 50mg at night. How long will I feel the bad effects (anxiety, insomnia) Effexor (venlafaxine) and Prozac has caused since stopped taking

It depends.: Stopping antidepressants can cause a "discontinuation syndrome" that people mistake for withdrawals because the symptoms include nausea, sleep disturbance irritability and a flu-like symptoms hence these medications should done gradually. The length of the symptoms will vary depending on how high a the doses were and how long you've been taking them. Seroquel (quetiapine) helps with sleep.

Call your doctor: Please contact your physician about this asap. S/he may need to adjust your seroquel (quetiapine) dose. If you have bipolar disorder, the sleep loss could be impending hypomania or mania. Your doctor will be best able to advise you. Be well.

Friend taking Effexor (venlafaxine) for 3 days. Has had mild side effects such as dry mouth, no appetite, headache and insomnia. Now has kyphosis. PERRLA absent.?

Kyphosis?: Kyphosis cannot come on quickly - it is an abnormal curvature of the upper spine. Are both of his pupils unequal, abnormally shaped and unreactive to light and accomodation? If so, then there is a serious problem and he should be evaluated. The other side effects described are common for effexor (venlafaxine) and will usually subside after 4-6 weeks.

Started Effexor (venlafaxine) 75mg have nausea headaches jaw tremors anxiety worse insomnia didn't have these sideeffects when I took 6 yrs ago how long will itlast?

Need more info.: These side effects more than likely will not abate until you either stop the Effexor (venlafaxine) or reduce the dose. DO NOT do this until advised so by your physician. Rapid and unsupervised changes in medications like Effexor (venlafaxine) also have certain side effects.

Find guidance: You probably do need medical guidance to help you safely wean yourself. But it is possible and you can interview physicians to see if they'll accept this as your goal and work with you on it. Don't waste motivation worrying about whether you screwed up anything. The best time to do a good thing is now. It is not hopeless. Sleep experts may help. So may meditation skills or yoga, etc. Best wishes!

3 weeks ago I started effexor (venlafaxine). Are increasing trouble sleeping, loss of appetite in evenings and mild jitteriness during the day normal?

3 weeks ago I started effexor (venlafaxine). Are increasing trouble sleeping, loss of appetite in evenings and mild jitteriness during the day normal?

Options: Not clear to me if this is increase in preexisting symptoms in which case increase in dose may be indicated. If these are new symptoms since starting effexor, (venlafaxine) then an alternative antidepressant should be considered. Please discuss with your prescribing doc.

If you don't need: An antipsychotic, then you could try trazodone. Start on a low dose under doctor's supervision and then gradually increase by 50 mg a night until you are sleeping adequately but not hungover the next day.

Depression: Good question and good for you. People respond idiosyncratically to meds for anx/dep. So there are still a lot of options open and I see this time and time that if you can be patient and work with a psych prescriber slowly and methodically typically you find something that works. Also transcranial stimulation may be something to consider though very new. Keep on trying. I know it is hard.

Could long term use of Effexor (venlafaxine) cause severe gastrointestinal problems?

Could long term use of Effexor (venlafaxine) cause severe gastrointestinal problems?

To date,: There are no long term effects of effexor (venlafaxine). It can cause GI effects- these are not severe symptoms, usually go away, and are limited to diarrhea or conversely in some patients, constipation; nausea, and rarely vomiting. Again it's usually early on. If you're suffering from severe gastrointestinal problems, you need to see your Primary care provider to have this checked. Good luck!

Is it possible for long term use of Effexor (venlafaxine) to cause severe GI problems?

Is it possible for long term use of Effexor (venlafaxine) to cause severe GI problems?

Reversible: Alot of the psychiatric medications can cause GI side effects. Usually constipation is a problem. This is because there is alot of serotonergic innerevation in the GI system, maybe even more than the brain. But, the bowels usually adapt, and if not they normalize when the med is discontinued.
