Does Effexor Cause Constipation
Increased effexor from 75mg to 150 mg 3 days ago and now experiencing constipation and gas. Is this common? I toleranced the first 75mg well.
Side effects from: Medications such as Effexor (venlafaxine), including constipation and gas, may occur early in treatment and after dose changes. They should subside as the body adjusts. If they continue and are intolerable then it is best to discuss them with your prescriber. Supportive measures can help. Best regards for relief. ...Read more
I've been on 75 mg of Effexor (venlafaxine) for gad for 3 wks. Some side-effects (constipation, lowered appetite), but no reduction in anxiety. Give it more time?
They say 6-8 wks: The time to maximal symptom reduction varies greatly. Early relief may be mostly placebo effect, but the great bulk of users agree that full function can be as long as 6-8 weeks. So, if you can tolerate the side effects, give it more time. But do talk with your doctor so both of you know what's happening and what to expect. Consider a talk therapist too since many mds have so little time. Best! ...Read more

Serotonin: Serotonin discontinuation symptoms, associated with abrupt discontinuation of Effexor (venlafaxine), could be related to it`s short half life. In most cases, this may be minimized by slowly tapering the dosage. Another strategy would be using a low dosage of a long acting ssri like fluoxetine. The physical symptoms include problems with balance, gastrointestinal and flu-like symptoms, and sensory and sleep disturbances. Psychological symptoms include anxiety and/or agitation, crying spells, irritability and aggressiveness. ...Read more

Ever since I started taking the generic for Effexor (venlafaxine) xr, I've been getting constipated all the time. I haven't changed my diet either. Help!
Talk to doctor: In my practice, most antidepressants, including Effexor (venlafaxine) xr, don't usually cause constipation. You need to carefully discuss this with your treating physician. There may be other general medical illnesses going on, medication interactions, and so on. Treatments for constipation are very effective once the causes are determined. Short term: There are at least three effects that venlafaxine (effexor) has on sleep - it has a short term effect increasing agitation and insomnia that lasts usually only a few days, it has a long term effect improving sleep by treating depression (which has a big negative effect on sleep), and it has a small long term effect reducing rem or dream sleep. For most people #2 is the most important. ...Read more

I am taking 75 mg effexor (venlafaxine). Does this drug affect your hormones? Can it cause a imbalance?
Reversible: Alot of the psychiatric medications can cause GI side effects. Usually constipation is a problem. This is because there is alot of serotonergic innerevation in the GI system, maybe even more than the brain. But, the bowels usually adapt, and if not they normalize when the med is discontinued. ...Read more

Does Effexor (venlafaxine) cause severe cause severe night sweats? Used to wake up soaked and dripping with sweat.
Could be: Unfortunately not uncommon for effexor (venlafaxine) and other norepinephrine increasing antidepressants (eg cymbalta, less so Wellbutrin) to increase anxiety despite good compliance. Which means increased heart rate, shakes, sweats, headaches and other fight or flight symptoms. A trial of a regular ssri (prozac, lexapro, zoloft, or celexa) can be a much better option. Please ask your doc about such options. ...Read more

Take 75mg effexor (venlafaxine). If it has plateaued and stopped working, what symptoms could that cause?
Same symptoms: Usually, when pt experiences what appears to be a "plateau" in response to antidepressants, it could be that the medication needs adjustment. This is presuming there have been no other changes that have occurred, such as changes in other medications, new medical conditions, or increased psychosocial stressors. Inadequate medication adherence can also present similarly. Discuss with doctor. Best. ...Read more
Dyspnea or not?: There have been patients that develop a catch in their breath while on medications. In addition a more central problem can occur where one seems to almost forget to breathe. Ssri's and snri's (like effexor) seem to not infrequently cause this. Decreasing the dose typically does not eliminate it. It usually does not occur with all the other agents in these classes - you will find one that does not. ...Read more

All of a sudden I'm reading that anxiety may be caused by EXCESS serotonin! (I'm taking 112.5 Effexor (venlafaxine) for GAD) Is there any validity to these findings
NOT Simple: Serotonin (5HT) is 1 of many neurotransmitters (NTs) in the brain. The effects of too much/ too little NT aren't evident right away. The brain responds to drugs & NTs in complex ways. Low 5HT levels in the hippocampus over time cause depression. But raising 5HT levels right away doesn't reverse depression. You need time for the neurons to make new connections. 5HT in bloodstream causes anxiety. ...Read more
