Does Cushings Disease Cause Elevated Calcium Levels
Pituitary hormone: These people have increased secretion of crh (corticotropin releasing hormone & acth (adrenocorticotropic hormone, also called corticotropin) from the pituitary gland. The cells that secrete acth also secrete melanocyt stimulating hormone (msh). Msh stimulates skin and mucus cells to secrete melanin (dark bronze pigment) which leads to the hyperpigmentation. Thats the full story! ...Read more
Suffering from Cushing syndrome for 3 years. Don't know what caused it. What tests should I go for to find out the cause of Cushing syndrome??
Cushings: On steroids?Prednisone/adrenal mass causes Cushings syndrome. Causes of Cushings Disease are pituitary adenoma (MRI -not 100%) or increased secretion of corticotropin releasing hormone from hypothalmus , Tests plasma corticotropin , salivary/ blood cortisol, 24urinary free cortisol dexamethasone supression, giving corticotropin releasing hormone, rarely sinus sampling. If done correctly.: Diagnosing cushing syndrome (oversupply of cortisol) is tricky. Cortisol levels go up and down normally, depending on the time of day. Therefore, timing of tests for cushing syndrome is important. The actual laboratory test for cortisol, however, is quite accurate. ...Read more
See below.: First, find out what's causing the cushing's syndrome. If it's due to overuse of steroids, cut down on the dose. If it's due to a tumor, surgery is the best treatment.Tumor in the pituitary can be removed by neurosurgeons, tumors in the adrenal, pancreas, lung can be removed by surgeons. Radiation therapy is used if surgery is not complete. Last but not least, medications can be used. ...Read more

A pituitary tumor causes classic cushings syndrome. The tumor releases acth which stimulates the adrenal gland to produce corticosteroid hormones.
Cushings syndrome can come about because of steroid hormones being used to treat an underlying condition or rarely from a tumor of the adrenal gland.
The cure of the syndrome depends on its cause. ...Read more
Rare disease: Cushing's syndrome is more prevalent in women than in men, but it is a relatively rare disease. The incidence is about 4 cases per million people. An endocrinologist may see a couple new cases per year. ...Read more
A few options: The treatment options depend on the cause of the cushing's syndrome. If the cause is due to overuse of steroids, then the treatment is to lower the dose. This is the best case scenario. Other treatment options involve: surgery, radiation therapy, and medications. Coincidentally, the fda just approved a new drug for cushing's syndrome on 2/17/2012. ...Read more
My lady friend has cushing syndrome. She was too embarassed to tell me any more. Can you explain it to me please?
Not your fault: Quoting dr. Loh:primary cushing's syndrome is the result of an endocrine active mass of adrenal gland cells that become so not as a result of lifestyle habits (good or bad). It's not your fault, but fortunately often completely curable. There are secondary cushing's syndromes related to medications doctors give to treat certain conditions, and it becomes a balance of benefits vs. Risks. ...Read more
Adrenal dysfunction: The most common form of cushing syndrome is due to taking glucocorticoid rxs (hormones such as prednisone, hydrocortisone) to treat asthma, arthritis, inflammatory bowel, etc. In the less common endogenous cushing syndrome, the adrenal gland (either one or both) produces too much cortisol hormone. This can be due to an over-acive tumor in the adrenal, or in pituitary gland that controls adrenals. ...Read more

OK, do it: Cushing's syndrome is a condition where your body makes too much cortisol (a hormone). A blood draw or 24 hour urine measurement of cortisol will give you the diagnosis. Another test called dexamathasone suppression test will also give you the diagnosis. Often time, you will need to repeat the tests, or do all of them. It's probably the most difficult diagnosis to make in endocrinology. ...Read more

Cushing: Yes. If Cushing syndrome is caused by excess ACTH secretion from the pituitary gland, the pituitary tumor can compress TSH secreting cells nearby, causing hypothyroidism. Generally a pituitary MRI is done, and a dexamethasone suppression test to differentiate between various causes of Cushing's symptoms. See an endocrine specialist. ...Read more
