Does Congenital Abnormalities Cause Spina Bifida
Helo dr. I had abortion twice due to birth defects. Spina bifida and rubella. How i could have saved my baby.Is something wrong with me n hubby.
Splna bifida: There are treatments such as Folic Acid being given before the pregnancy is started that can help reduce considerably the risk of spina bifida. The Folic Acid has to be started before conception by usually at least a month and carried out during the entire pregnancy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is spina bifida occulta congenital condition?
What are the remedies? I get bothering back pain at least once a year but does not affect daily activiti
Possibly: Spina Bifida occulta is often an incidental finding when someone develops back pain and has an x-ray done. This is due to incomplete fusion of the spinous process during development and is congenital. An MRI could be helpful to examine the spinal cord to see if there is and tethering. Discuss with you Doc. ...Read more
Nope.: All interventions for open neural tube defects aim at preventing further neuronal loss and cannot restore damage already done. That is why fetal interventions can prove a major breakthrough in prenatally diagnosed cases: the fetal neuronal plasticity and ability to regenerate damaged tissues is such that a much better long-term outcome can be achieved. http://women.texaschildrens.org/fetalcenter/. ...Read more
I have 35 degree congenital lumbar scoliosis along with spina bifida occulta in L5 vertebra. Is lifting weights and doing push ups a good idea?
It is fine: Typically spina bifida occulta is not highly destabilized and more of an incidental finding. The scoliosis should also not be a huge problem. My recommendation would be to work out, but don't do exercises that are bothersome to your low back. If it hurts, don't do it. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
No one knows : There seems to be an interplay of genetic and environmental factors that cause this disease. Women who have had one child with spina bifida, or who are obese or diabetic have an increased chance of having a child with the problem. It is known that taking Folic Acid during the fertile years decreases the chance of having this problem. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What causes spina bifida? Is spina bifida caused by a spinal cord injury, or a chromosomal disorder?
Spina : Spina bifida is not an injury. It is a birth defect caused by failure of the nervous system to fully develop. When the embryo is forming, the nervous system starts out as a "neural tube" that is supposed to grow in a very specific way. If it does not, you are left with "neural tube defects" like spina bifida. There is nothing we know of that causes it for sure, but certain things make it more likely. It is more common with children that have trisomy 13, 18, or 21, but that is just an association, not a cause. They are very common, and the only thing we know of that might help prevent them is for the mother to take folate (folic acid). The hard part about that is the mother has to take folate (folic acid) very early in the pregnancy, often before she even knows she is pregnant. That is why the all women of child-bearing age are advised to take at least 0.4 mg of Folic Acid every day. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
