Is it safe to take codeine on empty stomach? It causes me constipation

Is it safe to take codeine on empty stomach? It causes me constipation

Safe but nauseous: Codeine, and all of the opiate drugs, can cause nausea, especially if taken on an empty stomach. The best way to avoid this is to eat someting like bread or crackers before taking the drug. And all of the opiates also cause constipation- so drink more water and eat fruits and veggies. ...Read more

Have a sinus infection & was prescribed Zithromax & guaifenesin w/codeine. Can this cause constipation? I haven't really eaten but feel quite bloated.

After days: Usually only after several days of therapy will the opioid codeine contribute to constipation. If you've been on it for days, it may be the codeine. If you just recently started this regimen, I might suspect something else (diet, lack of hydration or movement). ...Read more

On codeine for sore lower back. Stomach extremely bloated -> bowel movements normal, don't think it's constipation. Stomach tight, irritable. Norm?

Side effect: It's true that codeine often causes constipation but it can also cause gastric irritation and/ or nausea in some patients. If you are intolerant of codeine you may have to get by with extra strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) which doesn't irritate the stomach. You may tolerate codeine if you take it with food and not on an empty stomach. ...Read more

I have been clean and in a program for 7 years and just had a drug test show up positive for Codeine without taking it. The test said 47ng/mL- causes?

I have been clean and in a program for 7 years and just had a drug test show up positive for Codeine without taking it. The test said 47ng/mL- causes?

We need to talk: As a pathologist, I would not accept this level as indicating codeine use. These assays generate background noise and low levels are to be expected when there's been no drug ingestion. This is about a sixth of 300 ng/mL which is a common cutoff for codeine. The lab's pathologist should agree or risk liability. I believe you're clean. If someone else doesn't, get a lawyer. ...Read more

I have chronic RLS after 3yrs on mirapex (pramipexole) it now causes symptoms to worsen! Also on codeine sulfate. What's next? Thought i'd found the relief

Troublesome!: Rls is very troublesome. All the meds we use show tolerance over time. You can google the laundry list of meds we use (sinemet, klonopin, neurontin, mirapex, (pramipexole) etc.) but your best bet is to sit down with a sleep specialist in your area. He/she can guide next med selection. Btw, occasionally 400 mg of magnesium helps before bedtime. Cheap, too. Best of luck! ...Read more

I have a codeine allergy (itchingrashvomiting). I've taken darvocet before. What is available for me to take now? Synthetics cause the same reaction

Codeine Allergy: First of all, there is no need to worry about darvocet since it and other Propoxyphene containing products no longer is on the market. The reactions you describe with Codeine are adverse effects, not allergies. If you truly need an opiate analgesic, pretreatment with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can reduce or eliminate the itching cased by opiates in some patients. ...Read more
