How many weeks does it take for claritin (loratadine) 10mg to work? How long should I give it a try before deciding to switch to a different antihistamine?
A few hours: Claritin (loratadine) should start working within a couple of hours. If it doesn't not help at all, then switching to another won't do you much good. If it does help somewhat, then you may try the other alternatives which may possess more antihistamine effect than Claritin (loratadine). ...Read more
I'm 17 and took 3 loratadine tablets, 10 mg/ Antihistamine in the last 24 hours, are there going to be any issues I should be worried about?
Probably not but...: Long acting anti-histamines should not be used more than one in 24 hours. Taking more has been associated with heart issues but that is still unlikely to occur. If you have any chest palpitations you should be evaluated. For future reference, these medications can take 4 - 6 hours to work. If you are still not getting relief you can safely add a short acting anti-histamine (Benadryl). ...Read more

I'm trying to decide on the best antihistamine (for colds) for my 2 year old to use. Which do you recommend fexofenadine or loratadine?
I have noticed that my body is immune to loratadine based antihistamines (doesn't make me tired) but any others do. Does this means tolerance?

Taking loratadine long term is safe. He could also try other antihistamines. Steroid nasal sprays are also safe to use long term and often more effective. Allergy testing may reveal avoidable triggers. The only treatment that even comes close to a cure is allergy immunotherapy. See an allergist to find the best option for your loved one. ...Read more
Yes: Claritin is a second generation antihistamine which causes much less drowsiness than first generation antihistamine, like benadryl (diphenhydramine). The number of people who feel drowsy on Claritin is so low that it is labeled "non-drowsy". But each of us is unique. Can antihistamines make my hypoglycemia worse? Seems like I'm having more low blood sugar occurrences while on Claritin (loratadine) or allegra.
Allegra (fexofenadine): I don't think so. If you really observe hypoglycemia when taking antihistamine then make you sure you eat 3 times a day, eat fruits between meal and just before your meal. Symptomatic hypoglycemia usually occur when blood sugar <80. We like to keep it above than 100. Symptom could include irritability, dizziness, sweating, weakness, confusion, passing out or death. ...Read more

Doxylamine has anti-allergy power superior to almost every other antihistamine on the market, with the exception of Diphenhydramine (benadryl), which is also sedating.
Other than claritin/loratadine, there are other non-sedating antihistamines such as allergra (fexofenadine). Zyrtec (cetirizine) (ceterizine) is generally non-sedating although ~5% feel sedated with it. ...Read more
