Severe allergy to sulfa drugs as child. Have taken Imitrex and hctz for years off and on w no prob. Would I be ok taking celebrex (celecoxib)?

Probably: Although the sulfur molecule is in Celebrex (celecoxib), (celecoxib) only a few people with allergies to sulfa antibiotics also react to Celebrex (celecoxib). The allergy appears to be related to a special form of sulfur at the molecular level. This form isn't present in non-antibacterial meds with sulfur in them. But talk to your doc about it & tell him your concerns. See http://tinyurl.com/ohak2hx and http://tinyurl.com/kzu9o6f ...Read more

Does Neurontin (gabapentin) contain sulfa?

No: I prescribe Gabapentin frequently and have never been concerned with whether my patients are allergic to sulfa when I prescribe it. Most patients tolerate Gabapentin very well. Does Pepcid (famotidine) or tagament contain sulfa? Already took a few pepcids (famotidine) but gave me horrible anxiety attacks. Was wondering if either had sulfa in them.

Does Pepcid (famotidine) or tagament contain sulfa? Already took a few pepcids (famotidine) but gave me horrible anxiety attacks. Was wondering if either had sulfa in them.

No: Sulfa is an antibiotic but sulfate is an agent (salt) bound to many medications and has not been known to cause any adverse reactions. It is unusual for Tagamet or Pepcid (famotidine) to cause an anxiety reaction. My best guess is that the intake of these drugs might have slowed down the breakdown of caffeine leading to a higher blood level and thus the anxiety. But then it may just be the drugs themselves. ...Read more

Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Sulfates not sulfa: Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contains sulfates. A patient history of allergic reaction to sulfa drugs should not exclude polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) as a treatment. There seems to be no correlation between trimethoprim sulfate and sulfa sensitivity. However, one can be allergic to anything. Check with your treating doctor. ...Read more

If one has a sulfa allergy and what would be the medicines to treat this?

If one has a sulfa allergy and what would be the medicines to treat this?

There are none: If you are truly allergic to sulfa you must avoid all forms of the drug whether it be in eye drops, pills or IV meds. There is no med to cancel out the allergy and true allergy could lead to life threatening consequences if exposed. It would be wise to invest in a medical alert bracelet to make sure people are aware if you cannot communicate. ...Read more

I have a sulfa allergy.
Are there any vitamins I should avoid?

Check the labels: Also, only use high quality pharmaceutical grade supplements and neutraceuticals, as the cheap stuff is from asian countries that don't have FDA oversight. I was just prescribed celebrax for sciatic nerve pain and I'm allergic to sulfa drugs. Problem?

Yes Big Problem: Celebrex (celecoxib) and your allergy. Given that your pain is not improved with conservative care, I would suggest seeing a pain/spine specialist to evaluate you further to evaluate what level the problem is at and what can be done to treat you.
