Does Cannabis Interact With Antidepressants Or Lithium
Is taking medical cannabis (as oil) on top of anti-depressants, contraindicated? Can they interact badly or is there no relation? Thanks
Cannabis is also: serotonergic, as are anti-depressants. The problem is that there are up to 11 different types of serotonin (15 in some studies). Anti-depressants target some of them, each med targeting a different pattern of serotonins. Cannabis also does this, and may overlap with what the meds are doing, hence "messing" with the effectiveness. Plus, pot is not standardized, so each dose varies. Bad ide ...Read more
Chemically, lithium is a light, soft, alkali metal. It's very highly reactive, so that in nature it's only found in compound form. It's useful in batteries. As a medication, Lithium Carbonate and citrate can be used to stabilize mood in people with bipolar disorder. In these people it can help with both mania and depression. Can I take cannabis for pain relief even whilst on antidepressants ? My mood has improved overall but pain still a problem.
It's Variable: Cannabis can be VERY helpful for pain.Still some folks, esp. those w/schizophrenia, react to it w/ paranoia, anxiety, &/or worsening depression.Yet, many people w/ chronic pain have depression BECAUSE of the chronic pain; in such cases, relieving the chronic pain is primary to relieving at least a portion of the depression. There are no specific interactions of cannabis w/ Effexor or Lyrica ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Does cannabis interact with cumadin/warfarin? I know that alcohol heightens irn, does marijuana lower it?
Don't know...: We don't know, as far as i can tell it has not been studied. I do know that smoking of any type, increases the risk of vascular events of the type we are generally trying to prevent with anti-coagulation with drugs like coumadin/warfarin. But as for directly affecting inr, we don't really know. Coumadin/warfarin is a dangerous drug with a narrow therapeutic window. I would advise caution. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I am going to try panax ginseng extract, but I am taking the antidepressant escitalopram. Does it interact with ginseng?
If grapefruit oil, extract, mist,or spray is applied topically on the body, inhaled, or accidentally ingested, will it interact with ssri antidepressant?
Food-drug interaxn?: Ingested grapefruit juice is know to interact with SSRIs; so the combo should B avoided. Apparently grapefruit essential oil's interactions (&/or phototoxicity) depend on how it is obtained (cold-pressed, etc). Unless there is significant absorption of the oil/mist/spray, there shouldn't be a significant rxn. Interaction from ingestion would depend on the amount ingested. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I am using Prozac 20 mg daily for anxiety. Is it safe to take gingko biloba supplements with prozac. I read that this herb might interact with antidepressants.?
Possible interaction: Gingko and Prozac are both metabolized by the same liver enzyme system, so can compete for use of this. Also gingko can slightly inhibit this enzyme system, possibly slowing prozac's metabolism. There is also anecdotal evidence that gingko + Prozac in depressed patients can lead to hypomania -- but we don't know whether gingko alone can do this (without the prozac). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
