Does my 53yr old husband need to be concerned about a blood pressure of 145/89? Could this be causing a very slow heart rate recovery from exercise?

Is heart a concern?: Your concern would obviously be heart related. High BP could contribute to heart disease. My heart rate is over 100. I take blood pressure medication. Should I be concerned? What should I do, if anything?

Yes, a concern: Normal heart rate (HR) should be in the 70s. Are you taking a beta-blocker, which will lower your heart rate? (unfortunately, beta-blockers reduce glucose tolerance with prolonged use). I suggest 1-2 teaspoons of Morton's Lite Salt (230 mg sodium, 340 mg potassium per 1/4 tsp) and 400-500 mg magnesium each day. Walking (30 minutes or so each day) will normalize your BP and HR. ...Read more

Pulse Rate: Blood pressure and heart rate or pulse are not necessarily directly related. There is one class of blood pressure medications called beta blockers that do work on BP and also reduce pulse. Ideally for an adult pulse should average 60-100 beats per minute resting rate. Many factors can increase pulse rate. Talk with your medical professional about your concern. ...Read more

Is there a way to raise my blood pressure and lower my heart rate?

Is there a way to raise my blood pressure and lower my heart rate?

Why?: Why you want to raise your bp? Aerobic exercise using target heart rate zones help you with your goals but will normalize your bp. BP of less than 130/80 is the goal. Decrease the risk of cardiovascular complication. But, if you combined weight lift and aerobic in alternates days, increasing your lean body mass, your BP will stay up around 120-130/80.
