How come i need to have a full bladder when I have radiation treatments?

Radiation: Now a days we have imrt (intensity modulated radiation treatments) that provide more intense, localized treatment to the organ or area that is receiving the radiation. If you are receiving radiation to your cervix/uterus or prostate in males it will keep the majority of the bladder well from getting exposed and also will push the large and small bowel away from the area of radiation. ...Read more

Though seemingly a simple reservoir, the bladder is a complex organ intricately connected with the brain and spinal cord with sensory, motor, and autonomic circuits. The muscular layer that contracts during voids ...Read more

If you are on blood thinners, sometimes blood is seen in urine or rectum. Often transient or self limited. However, blood in urine can be sign of other bad things like bladder tumor, or other conditions like one passing a kidney stone etc. Get it evaluated. ...Read more

Do the leupron shots that are started before radiation therapy really help the cancer cells (prostate )shrink at all? What is the data with this?

Sort of: Lupron (leuprolide) injections do help shrink prostate overall size if given prior to radiotherapy. I think this is a general prostate effect, not just a specific tumor cell effect. It does help minimize side effects related to radiotherapy by shrinking the overall target volume, allowing less tissue to be irradiated. ...Read more

How long does it take for a bladder to heal is biopsy if performed where there has been external beam radiation damage? ( treated for prostate cancer)

It Depends: The rate and extent of healing depend on the amount of radiation received, the time since radiation, the size of the wound, other medical problems a person may have and other factors. Generally, i would expect that a bladder biopsy after prostate cancer radiation would heal in a a week or two, but there is a small possibility of getting a long-lasting wound. ...Read more

Second bout of cancer. Several years ago in gall bladder and now thyroid. It was removed and he's (58 years old) is now radiation pill. Survival rate?

D/w your oncologist: Survival for cancer will depend on diffferent things like the stage, type of cancer ( biology of cancer), your overall health condition, treatment received, response of treatment etc. Now, i doubt that the cancer in the gallbladder is directly connected to the thyroid- thus these are two separate occurences. Prognosis of follicular/papillary is good if surgically resected w/negative margin.D/w md. ...Read more

During radiation for colon cancer, there was a wall thickening of the bladder, but the doctor told my husband that theres nothing to worry. What could?

Depends: Bladder thickening may be nothing but should probably be investigated further. A few details would help: what was the stage and location of the colon cancer? What kind of surgery did he have? If it was rectal cancer (most likely since he got radiation) did he also get chemotherapy and was it given with radiation, after surgery, before surgery or all? Does he have any urinary bleeding or burning? ...Read more
