Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

If i've been on birth control for over 6 months and take it correctly, and he pulls out, does it mean a delayed period means I am pregnant?

If i've been on birth control for over 6 months and take it correctly, and he pulls out, does it mean a delayed period means I am pregnant?

Likely not: Do you mean birth control pills? When taken correctly, at the same time every day, the pill has a failure rate <1%. Withdrawal alone has a much higher failure rate, but the 2 methods together have a low rate of failure to prevent pregnancy. If, by a "delayed period" your mean, a missed period, it can occur due to the pill. Check a pregnancy test to be sure, and if negative, keep taking the pills. ...Read more

What does faint brown spotting 4 days before period is due mean? I'm on birth control and had unprotected sex 26 days ago? Could I be pregnant?

Depends: If you have been taking the pill regularly, you are unlikely to be pregnant. If you miss your period by 4-5 days, do a home pregnancy test. If the result is negative repeat the test 4-5 days later unless you get a period by then. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully.
If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD.
Practice safe sex.

Just got off birth control and have a late period and really bad cramping, but 2 negative pregnancy tests what does this mean?

Just got off birth control and have a late period and really bad cramping, but 2 negative pregnancy tests what does this mean?

Hormones readjusting: Most birth control works by providing hormones that cause the body to act like it is pregnant. It is these hormonal changes that cause the body not to release an egg to be fertilized, thereby preventing pregnancy. It is not at all unusual for it to take the body a few months to adjust to the hormonal changes. Don't be concerned if it takes a while for your body to readjust. ...Read more

What does faint brown spotting 4 days before period is due mean? I'm on birth control and had unprotected sex 26 weeks ago? Could I be pregnant?

You would know: by now. At 26 weeks, your uterus would a few inches above your belly button and the fetus would be kicking and moving around. Spotting is common between periods and before periods both in women with natural cycles and women on hormonal contraception. Spotting just means that nobody's cycles are "perfect." BC pills work well: Pregnancy unlikely. A woman who is properly taking her Birth Control pills, and is beyond her first pack of pills, has contraceptive protection ALL the time, regardless of where she is in her pill pack. That's very important to understand. A home urine pregnancy test gives a very reliable result 3 weeks after sex, if one is still worried about possible pregnancy. ...Read more

My girlfriend just got two periods in three weeks and she doesn't use birth control. Does this mean that she is possibly pregnant?

Probably not: There are many reasons for irregular bleeding and certainly pregnancy is one of them. However, less frequent bleeding is more common. If you are concerned about pregnancy, a simple inexpensive home pregnancy should provide the answer. If negative and the abnormality should continue, she should be evaluated by a health care professional. ...Read more

I have to get on birth control to help regulate my periods. Does that mean i wont be able to become pregnant cus thats what i been trying to do .?

Another medication: Women with irregular periods often take ocp because it manages menses, corrects hormone issues and provides contraception. When you want to get pregnant then you need a different medication: drugs that cause ovulation. If you ovulate then the cycles will also become regular but now you can conceive. See your doctor about this issue. ...Read more

Do irregular periods (not on birth control) mean you will have problems getting pregnant later in life?

Do irregular periods (not on birth control) mean you will have problems getting pregnant later in life?

Not necessarily: It is common in the teenage years to have irregular periods that often become more regular over time. Most people still can get pregnant without problems. However, you should see a doctor for a few tests such as thyroid and an exam to make sure there is nothing causing the irregular cycles that can/needs to be treated now even when not trying to get pregnant. ...Read more

I was on birth control for 3 months taking it irregularly. Had unprotected sex during . Had all my withdrawl periods . Does that mean i'm not pregnan?

No.: Only a negative pregnancy test means you are not pregnant. But, I am worried by your comments. If you are using bcp irregularly due to difficulty remembering etc. Maybe that method of bc is not your "cup of tea"
there are other forms that promote better compliance & that would be better suited for you. Ex. The patch every week. The ring every month, Depo-Provera every 3 months, iud for 5 or 10 yrs. ...Read more

Can you get pregnant while on you're period & on birth control ?

Unlikely: It's unlikely that you'll ovulate in the first few days after you start bleeding. However, I do tell my patients to consider that there is no such thing as a 'safe' day. If you are taking your birth control pills as well, then that's another protection. Birth control pills when taken perfectly every day prevent about 96% of all pregnancies. So still no 100%. Best of luck. ...Read more
