Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
My ca125 levels are slightly elevated and there is a solid mass on my ovary, should I be concerened that it is ovarian cancer?
Depends: Ask your gyn. A solid mass is concerning, but your age, menopausal status, and the ultrasound characteristics are important as well. Elevated ca-125 suggests ovarian cancer, but may be somewhat elevated in many benign conditions, as well, including endometriosis. All of this needs a discussion with your gyn and a possible referral to a gyn oncologist - who are the real experts in this area. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have ovarian cysts on my both ovaries. still I am twenty. My CA 125 count is 478 . is it a ovarian cancer?
Unlikely but needs m: Any mass(even a cyst) if it is growing and gets to be over 5-6 CM has to be suspect for ovarian cancer. So you need a good gynecologist who can examine and check your ovaries periodically(like every 3 months). CA 125 can be high even in benign conditions unless it is rising rapidly and gets up to be.500 units. This should be checked periodically at 3 month intervals along with the Ultrrasound . ...Read more
99% when cancer: Ca-125 is 99% accurate if an ovarian cyst or tumor happens to be cancer. The problem with this blood test is that it is very inaccurate when there is no cancer (called a false positive), sometimes up to 45%. This is why ob/gyns do not use this test as a screening test, or at patient request. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Not very.: Ca 125 is touted as a screening tool for ov ca but is elevated in only 50% of those with early stage disease. Approx 1% of normals have a high ca 125. Since ovarian cancer is relatively uncommon, the ability of a positive test to predict ca is about 3%. There is general consensus that ca 125 is not a good screening tool for average risk females. Consider ca 125 for those with high risk. ...Read more
It is a cancer which arises from the ovary. This cancer is typically silent, producing little or no symptoms till it spreads, first into the pelvic area and later into the peritoneal cavity leading to fluid accumulation(ascites) which is often the first symptom. Despite its late presentation, there is a reasonable treatment for it, with some long term survivors even ...Read more
Ca-125 (cancer antigen 125 or carbohydrate antigen 125) is a biomarker/tumor marker for ovarian cancer (etc); however, it is not sensitive or specific enough to use as a screening test. Also, a uk study showed that treating based on ca125 level did not improve outcomes. "125" comes from the 125th attempt to develop a marker. It was introduced by bast ...Read more
