No nasal polyps, no asthma, but 3 or 4 hives after nsaids. Also some tiny hives with no nsaids at times. I want to take aspirin anyway. Safe enough?

Which NSAID?: Hives from NSAID is considered to be an allergic reaction specific to that nsaid. Although once suspected to worsen hives from any cause, this is no longer true. However if your hives occur in the absence of nsaid, then it is likely from causes other than NSAID including asa. Thus you will need to sort out which NSAID you need to avoid (read the generic not the brand name). ...Read more

Ibuprofen, aspirin now cause mild hives. Tylenol doesn't help me. It's only hives, can I still take it? Is it even a "true" allergy? I have no asthma

Avoid Aspirin etc: Hives indicate a true allergy. You do not have to have wheezing, coughing --signs of an asthma reaction- to call this a serious allergy. 1% of the population is allergic to Aspirin and other anti inflammatories. Sometimes, though not usually in those with hives, allergists desensitize patients so they can take these medicines but this is complex look carefully at labels all medications always! ...Read more

I've never had an issue with NSAIDs But after taking 1 baby Aspirin today I feel mildly itchy. Is this an allergy?

I've never had an issue with NSAIDs But after taking 1 baby Aspirin today I feel mildly itchy. Is this an allergy?

Possible: Aspirin can cause an itchy hives in some people but your problem may also be coincidental. However I would still advise avoidance . If a low-dose ASA is needed for blood clotting issue, consult an allergist to confirm the ASA allergy. Unfortunately desensitization does not work for itching or hives. ...Read more

3 allergists told me there was no way to test for an aspirin/nsaid allergy. I am desperate to know for sure if i'm allergic. Is there really no test?

No safe test: Since Aspirin and NSAID allergy is not typically mediated by ige antibody, allergy blood and skin tests are not helpful. A challenge test where the medication is taken can be done, but the risk may be unacceptable. ...Read more

Not related: If you have an allergy to Aspirin and or NSAID then a steroid is not the same medicine. But your doctr will ask you what your allergy is. Do you get hives? Breathing difficulty? The shoulder cortisone injection for someone 22 years old is also a concern as it is a temporary therapy. ...Read more
