When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

Could drinking excessively during the first few weeks of pregnancy cause a blighted ovum?

Unknown: This is not known for sure but it's probably not so. However, heavy drinking in first trimester can absolutely cause fetal alcohol syndrome and possible fetal death, so how about it's a really poor idea! ...Read more

Is a blighted ovum something that occurs naturally or can someone do something early on in the pregnancy that causes that to happen (like taking Xanax (alprazolam) before realizing I was pregnant)?

Not your fault: This can just happen. Most likely the fertilized egg had genetic defect and so would not have grown well anyway. So this is your body's natural defense against having a baby with a birth defect. Unlikely to be related to xanax (alprazolam). ...Read more

Blighted ovum pregnancy. Had sex day of spotting. Heavy miscarriage bleeding next day. Can sex the previous day cause another pregnancy?

Had sex day of spotting with blighted ovum preg. Heavy miscarriage bleeding next day. Light bleeding 2 more days. Could that sex caused another pregnancy?

Probably not: It is unlikely if you have completely expelled the previous pregnancy that was a blighted ovum as Mother Nature will not reset the pituitary gland for another ovulation until the HCG levels drop from an existing pregnancy. ...Read more

Is a yolk sac a good sign for a viable pregnancy? Could we see a yolk sac when its a blighted ovum?
Usually good: A yolk sac is an early sign that usually is a good predictor. However, just like anything in medicine, nothing is 100% so a follow-up ultrasound in about a week should be done as you should be able to see a fetal pole and a heartbeat around 6 and a half weeks. ...Read more

My 5th pregnancy was a blighted ovum. (my first miscarriage). I am pregnant again is it likely I will have a blighted ovum again?

Miscarriage: Every pregnancy has about a 25% chance of miscarriage, which may increase slightly with age. The fact that you've had other pregnancies is encouraging, but each pregnancy carries that risk. There is nothing you could've done to cause it, nor to prevent it. I am sorry for your loss and wish you good luck with this one. ...Read more

I recently had a blighted ovum. I'm now pregnant again and going in for a 7 week ultrasound. Will they be able to tell if this pregnancy is viable?

Assuming: That the transvaginal dating confirms 7 weeks, a heartbeat should be detected in a normal pregnancy. If it is 6 weeks, a heartbeat may or may not be detected, and if it is 5 weeks or less, probably won't be detected even in a normal pregnancy. This is also assuming that the gestation is otherwise normal in appearance. ...Read more

Blighted ovum or too early to tell just an embryo 6 weeks 2 days or 5 weeks 2 days with still developing pregnancy symptoms help.... They scared us

What will be will be: Let nature do what it does, and not worry at all until later in the pregnancy. That is because only a portion of conceptions become successful pregnancies. Nature weeds out genetic mutations and other abnormal embryos, in trying to preserve the human species. It has worked fairly well thus far, bringing us here from even before our caveman days. Be hopeful, but don't worry. What will be will be. ...Read more

Hello...I have a d& c for blighted ovum after a 8.5 weeks pregnancy. Want to know when should I start for ttc and what is the chance of another b.O?

4 weeks preg, what are some signs of a healthy pregnancy and an actual embryo is growing rather than a blighted ovum? Preg tests are getting darker.
Impossible to tell: The symptoms of early pregnancy, nausea, frequent urination, tiredness are largely related to the hormones produced by the placenta rather than the fetus. Even in the cases of unsuccessful pregnancies such as blighted ova, it may impossible this early to tell the two apart. Your doc will need to follow you with ultrasounds and likely bloodwork to tell. ...Read more

How viable pregnancy wth increasing bhcg lvls. Wk 4 (8000hcg); Wk 5 (24000); Wk 8 (174000). is there a chance of blighted ovum? In 2 wks will be U/S.

Numbers are good: But nothing is specific enough to guarantee it couldn't still be a blighted ovum. I run a specialty practice where we can US patients when the hCG is above 2000, so we routinely do 6 week ultrasounds. If you do not have access to US until 10 weeks that's not a cause for concern, but I'm afraid you'll just have to wait until then. Good luck and good wishes. ...Read more

In march 2013, I had d&c (abortion) due to blighted ovum. I am 36 days from my last period and my pregnancy test is negative. Please advice me.?

When was test done?: Pregnancy is the most common cause of a missed period. If not pregnant, other causes of a late or missed period include: excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, having an illness, traveling, medicines (especially birth control pills), hormonal disorders, etc… a visit to one’s ob-gyn doctor is a good idea if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome. ...Read more

I got a positive pregnancy test, but I have no symptoms. My last pregnancy was a blighted ovum (no pg symptoms) before that I miscarried from turner's syndrome (had pg symptoms) is this a bo again?

You can't tell: You cannot tell whether or not this is a blighted ovum just based on the presence or absence of pregnancy symptoms. May women will have more symptoms in one healthy pregnancy versus another healthy pregnancy. Your doctor can perform an ultrasound at 6-7 weeks that can confirm whether or not there is a properly developing pregnancy. Good luck! ...Read more

I had a blighted ovum with my first pregnancy, I found out I am 6 weeks 3 days pregnant now, what are my chances of having another blighted ovum?

Low: I think your chances of this happening again are low. Blighted Ovum is an out-of-date term for which is now called an Anembyronic pregnancy. These typically do not have a fetal pole (a tiny baby). If you based your current gestational age on a regular period cycle, then you should be able to see this fetal pole and likely the heart beating on ultrasound by this point. Good luck. ...Read more

Hello.: Hello. I am sorry to hear about your situation. If your doctor did an serum HCG and the level was far to too low for a fetus of this age, that would be suggestive that the ovum did not live. I think it would bother me if a physician did not confirm the ultrasound finding. I recommend that you talk to your physician and explain your concerns. ...Read more

How high do hCG levels rise with a blighted ovum? Do they rise like in a normal pregnancy?

Miscarriage: The HCG levels can rise quite high with a blighted ovum, but these levels do not rise normally. The level of HCG does not tell if you have a blighted ovum or what is called a missed abortion by some. If your HCG level is doubling every 48 hours in the first weeks of pregnancy, your pregnancy is most likely normal - if not, probably a miscarriage. ...Read more

Can hCG levels go down to 0 before you bleed the sac out in a blighted ovum pregnancy? Could I ovulate while bleeding or a day or 2 after bleeding stop

Blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is a fertilized egg which is not growing, and at some point will abort spontaneously. HCG levels will go to zero sometimes prior to expulsion of the blighted ovum. Ovulation may occur any time, since the blighted ovum will not prevent it, but chances are pregnancy will not result until the blighted ovum is passed. ...Read more

Miscarriage?: There can be retained parts of the pregnancy that can be passed later as you imply. Sometimes this can occur after the bleeding from the miscarriage has been over for some time. If there was blood with the tissue and it continues it might be an indication of the need for a D & C to make sure all the pregnancy parts are out of the uterus. ...Read more
