Elevate: Swelling after an ankle fracture can persist for months after the injury. 'Edema', swelling etc .is best helped by elevating the affected extremity ( foot/ ankle) above heart level( mid- chest)and application of an ice compress acutely. I've twisted my ankle and still have pain on a scale of 10. Could it be broken. There us a lot of edema. And it doesn't look any better.
Bad sprains can : Be swollen and hurt for some time. You should be using a brace or cam walker I the pain is that secvere. How are you rehabbing it? And yes, the possibility of a fracture is real.
