Does Acupuncture Cause Scarring On The Back
Acupuncture is a treatment based on Chinese medicine -- a system of healing that dates back thousands of years. At the core of Chinese medicine is the notion that a type of life force, or energy, known as qi (pronounced "chee") flows through energy pathways (meridians) in the body. Each meridian corresponds to one organ, or group of organs, that governs particular bodily functions. Achieving the proper flow of qi is thought to create health and wellness. Qi maintains the dynamic balance of yin and yang, which are complementary opposites. According to Chinese medicine, everything in nature has both yin and yang. An imbalance of qi (too much, too little, or blocked flow) causes disease. To restore balance to the qi, an acupuncturist inserts needles at points along the meridians. These acupuncture points are places where the energy pathway is close to the ...Read more
16 year old golfer with sports injury in his back in May 2016, re-injured July 2016 playing squash, 2 MRI's done. What might cause ongoing pain......?
Is there instability?: One consideration is to do flexing and extending xrays. If there is motion that would explain the persistent pain. The MRI can show a stress fracture but sometimes it is hard to tell due to motion artifact. Given the lack of agreement I would bite the bullet and get a SPECT bone scan. If negative then push forward with core strengthening with a physiatrist and physical therapist. If it is a stress fracture and it is not healing you could consider a bone stimulator as an off label treatment. I published one case where this was done successfully in a 17 year old elite gymnast. ...Read more
Successful Treatment: Acupuncture can be successful in treating backache, back pain, etc. Recent studies compare acupuncture, chiropractic and physical therapy. Chiropractic was shown to be best for back pain. Acupuncture may be used in conjunction to eliminate acute pain, and rehabilitation should be performed to stabilize for the long term. ...Read more

Acupuncture is a method that stimulates nerves and muscle tissue to release stress and relieve pain. If the pain is due to structural damage, such as fractures, dislocation, or malformation, acupuncture may, at its best, provide temporary relief.
Also, as not all chefs cook the same, not all acupuncture treatment provide the same efficacy, so if it didn't work, it doesn't mean it doesn't work. ...Read more

Acupuncture - if you have a needle against or near a nerve or your spine, would it be dangerous to move?
Move how much: Needles are placed to contact a nerve's electric field when using major acupuncture points. If the needle approached the nerve to closely it would be be painful. Except in rare situations when I have a very shallow insertion the patient can usually move some. I move about all the time with needles in my neck and back. But usually people sit or lie quietly when needles are in place. ...Read more

Fertility drugs & IUIs unsuccessful; heartbroken so tried acupuncture & chinese herbs. Worried about effects. Can either cause added height in a 37 YO?
No: Acupuncture is a time honored treatment for pain, nausea, energy and organ imbalance. Also it can help people with addictions who have failed to control smoking or narcotic use for their back pain. The practitioner of acupuncture can be a physician with 200 hours of training, or a non-physician with years of training. Seek someone you can work with for the duration. Maintain hope. ...Read more
Theoretically and in reality it does not happen because nerves are very slippery and movable, and the acupuncture needles flexible. Because of that it is virtually impossible to pears a nerve.
Of cause care is being taken that nerves are avoided.
Acupuncture points are located along the fascias (very thin transparent tissues enveloping the muscles) and usually away from the nerves. ...Read more
Often- yes: I completely agree with dr. Yang. It is important to have chronic or severe pain assessed by your physician. Acupuncture can improve many types of back pain by breaking down ashi or trigger points. It removes obstructions in blood flow, lymph drainage, electrical conductivity & qi. It can help to improve range of motion. Talk to your physician about this great option. ...Read more
Excellent option: I would make sure that your physician has evaluated your back to ensure that you do not need surgical intervention. However, back pain is often treated effectively with acupuncture. Western medicine often requires an accurate diagnosis to provide treatments. Acupuncture is often helpful for specific symptoms or congregates of symptoms even when diagnosis has not been clearly established. ...Read more
Went to acupuncture for back pain& anxiety. Was given 20 mins session&Chinese herbs. Was awake all night. Feel more anxious. Can I get back to normal?
What normal?: By normal do you mean before your session (when you had pain and anxiety) or before you had pain and anxiety? That is a very unusual response to acupuncture and might be caused by anxiety instead of the treatment. The herbs generally take time to work but try stopping them to see if you feel better. If acupuncture made you feel worse its effects should wear off quickly. See my comment for more. ...Read more

the real answer is nobody knows. They have never been compared head-to-head in any sort of controlled trial. They are both treatments that can be beneficial and I would suggest doing both of them. Consider epidurals too. When dealing with a pinched nerve, I think the most important thing is to know if there is nerve damage (an EMG will diagnose). If so, surgery is warrante. ...Read more
Are Asian acupuncture clinics reliable? I am considering going there for my back pain and don't want to take meds.
See below.: Since acupuncture began in china, there are many asian acupuncture clinics. My patients have reported many excellent experiences from those locations. There is a new generation of acupuncturists in the us - physicians from a variety of specialties who have secondary training in acupuncture. The acupuncturist needs to be knowledgable, experienced and be a gentle needler. ...Read more
Doc said unlikely that acupuncture or chinese herbs for infertility cause growth spurts but could either cause sudden 2-3 inch height increase in 36YO?
NO; check for cause:
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help some cases of infertility (see Dr. Fowler's answer for details). It's unfortunate that Dr. Fisher is so sure of himself when he is obviously biased and knows nothing about Chinese medicine.
While Chinese medicine helps many things it can't cause a growth spurt in a 36 yo. The most likely cause is a benign pituitary tumor raising HGH. Have your Dr. Test you. ...Read more
