Most acute diarrheal: illnesses in modern countries are caused by viruses. Antibiotics may prolong symptoms by killing off healthful bacteria. Most bacterial infections (Salmonella, Shigella, e.Coli & Campylobacter) resolve without antibiotic treatment.
