Does A Colonoscopy Check The Small Intestine
The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more
Only a little part: A full colonoscopy goes through the whole colon (large intestine) and the last part of the small intestine called the ileum. A atandard colonoscopy can't go further than that. To see the rest of the small bowel you need special techniques such as double balloon enteroscopy. Imaging such as MRI or ct scans or barium studies can also visualize the small bowel, but cannot obtain biopsies. ...Read more
Colonoscopy was done and there was hemorrhoid's found in the last portion of small intestine. What could be some causes?
I had an edoscopy done and it showed normal results and so did my colonoscopy, should I concern myself with small intestine cancer?
Probably not: Small intestine cancer is rare. Unless you have unusual persistent GI symptoms or strong family history of cancer, there is no reason to worry about it. ...Read more
What small intestine disorders can cause symptoms similar to crohns. So far upper gi, colonoscopy and bloodwork not showing anything abnormal?
What does dark green stool mean (problem in colon or small intestine)? Having for 5 weeks. Waiting for my colonoscopy biopsy results.
Had colonoscopy/endoscopy this year both clear Except for high lymphocyte count in small intestine-had colon cleanse 2day afterward had bloody mucus?
Why did you cleanse?: Your database suggests enteritis--an inflammatory condition of the small intestine (like Crohn's disease or infection, among others). Your bloody effluent after cleansing raises concern for ongoing/undertreated inflammation. Please don't cleanse again, but instead start appropriate medication for your condition--call your doctor today. ...Read more
Severe chronic constipation colonoscopy/egd nego same with c, small bowel series showed slow colon, fast small intestine, is this from my dysautonomia?
Colonoscopy found tiny ulcers in my small intestine doc questioning if Crohn's can this be if after iron infusion I now have normal CBC and iron level?
Small or large?: Doesn't really make a lot of difference, but I suspect colonoscopy found ulcers in large intestine and your doc felt they might look like crohn's. A good response to iron infusion does not change any of the thinking about whether those lesions are crohn's like. The biopsy should give a lot more information. ...Read more
I had neg- colonoscopy, EGD, HIDA, CT abdomen/pelvis, RUQ ultrasound, celiac panel. The small bowel series showed rapid transit. I also had a neg pancreas test. What on earth is causing my weight loss and undigested food/fat in stool?

Should I have exploratory surgery on my abdomen? I have been dealing with stomach and/or intestinal issues for a couple of years now. I have had many tests such as, endoscopy, colonoscopy, xrays, ct's, tons of blood work, gall bladder scan and stomach emp
First of all you need a surgeon who is willing to do an ex lap surgery. The only thing I think they may find is possible scar tissue and honestly I am not sure this would cause all of your symptoms. It sounds like you may be dealing with ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), however the vomiting is not characteristic. Have you or were you ever exposed to any chemicals or lived near an industrial plant? Is it possible that you are ingesting a substance that you are unaware of? Consider your surroundings and everything you take in. Is anything different in your life since this all started? If you think of anything discuss this with your doctors; every bit of information may be helpful in solving this puzzle.
I hope you find answers soon. ...Read more
Fever of 99.6 for 7 days, left lower abdomen pain, bloated, occasional bleeding in bowel, diarrhea, food allergies, throwing up clean colonoscopy. Help?
Get 2nd opinion: It almost sounds like diverticulitis which may not be detected by a colonoscopy. On the other hand, throwing up is not part of the symptoms unless you have a systemic infection which does occurs in diverticulitis. The counterpoint is that diverticulitis occurs usually in a much older age Food allergy is not associated with a fever. Suggest a consult @ an university center or with another GI. ...Read more
I had a colonoscopy done today and doc said he had a hard time getting to my small intestines and had to use forceps, why would've it been hard?
I had MRI of small intestines that had shown no abnormalities. Is there any point to have a colonoscopy next? Would that show anything different? Ty
Possibly: I see that you have abdominal bloating. There can be many causes for that. An abdominal MRI gets a good look at the ovaries and other abdominal organs, but it is not good at seeing the insides of your intestines. If you have not had a colonoscopy, this may be a test your doctor orders. It looks at the inside of your large intestine and gives different information than the MRI. Hope that helps! ...Read more
Will a barium test show all of the stool in the small and large intestines? Is it typical to have one performed weeks before the first colonoscopy?
No and no: Barium is a contrast agent which helps the visualization of the bowel during X-ray studies. When given as an enema, it helps for large bowel (colon) examination. Orally, it can help for small bowel evaluation. Neither route is useful for imaging BOTH large and small bowel. If the patient has taken proper bowel preparation measures, there is in fact no stool in the bowel to degrade the visualization. ...Read more
My son was told after a colonoscopy, that his small intestines were on one side of his body and his colon on the other. His birth weight was only 4lbs and 5 oz. Born only two weeks early he was considered full term. Can this cause problems later?
Hard to know: The colon is part of your intestine so I'm not sure what your son was really told. I suspect that he was told he has a malrotation (though this is difficult to tell from colonoscopy). This is a dangerous condition and needs to be surgically corrected asap- to be able to say more i'd need to know the medical terms that were used. ...Read more
Pillcam = many small + large bowel AVMs. Yet 2 colonoscopies earlier that year showed none. Could sudden lesions b related to mast cell disorder?
AVM's in colon: Intestinal arteriovenous malformations are possible to see with a camera, and may have been missed at colonoscopy, which looks mainly for masses not flat lesions such as AVM's. Such can appear quickly, but usually only secondary to bowel inflammatory episodes. It depends on whether you were symptomatic when you had either the camera or the colonoscopies ...Read more
If neither a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy detects a physiological problem, could the cause of constipation lie with the small bowel?
Wrong approach, Jim: There are a variety of causes of constipation. Only in a small minority of cases does endoscopy on either end show the cause. If drinking plenty of water, a stool softener, and roughage in the diet doesn't help, then it's time for a thyroid check, porphyria screen, Chagas? Dairy / cheese in diet? Meds? Pb poisoned? Functional / irritable bowel syndrome? Read up on these. ...Read more
