Is docusate sodium or docusate calcium a better stool softener?

Is docusate sodium or docusate calcium a better stool softener?

Depends: Since calcium tends to constipate, i'd tend to side with the sodium version. However, people with hypertension who are limiting their sodium intake should probably choose the calcium version. The docusate is the active component; so either version should work. Adding more fiber & fluids to your diet will help keep you regular, too.

No: It lowers the surface tension of water allowing water to stick to other things, so it softens stools by increasing the amount of water in the stool. It is also used in soaps and shampoos to allow the soap and water to breakdown the oils on the skin and hair. It is also used in pesticides to allow the pesticide to stick to plants and bugs.

How do you increase BM frequency? I have a BM maybe twice a week with colace (docusate sodium). How do I make sure I am more regular?

Several things: Make sure that you have reasonable intake of fiber which means a diet that includes roughage like in the case of green leafy vegetables. You also want to make sure you stay well hydrated. Additionally you want to remain active, as activity does stimulate normal gastrointestinal motility. This is a reasonable place to start.

How long should it take for hemorrhoids to clear up if I'm taking colace (docusate sodium) every day?

Not just hemorrhoids: Are you sure you have just hemorrhoids? Bleeding from the rectum that recurs may also indicate anal fissures, proctitis (due to infection, inflammatory bowel disease, radiation therapy, stercoral ulcers, rectal prolapse, trauma, etc.) or a bleeding source further upstream. Depending on your age, risk factors, current medication (aspirin, nsaid's, anticoagulants can cause bleeding), get evaluated.

Is it ok to use colace (docusate sodium) long term?

Not the best.: Instead of using Colace (docusate sodium) a long term, a better approach would be to increase the amount of fiber in your diet and consider a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil, daily. When you do that, you should ramp up the fiber slowly, to avoid getting gassy, and you should increase the amount of fluid intake in addition. Good luck.
