Dobutamine: IV medication given primarily for congestive heart failure from heart muscle weakening. This increases the ability of the heart to contract and increase blood flow throughout the body helping with heart failure symptoms. Used with diuretic therapy (Lasix) to get extra fluid/water out of the body. Used in hospital but can be used at home for chronic therapy for end-stage heart failure.See 1 more doctor answer
Yes and no: They are both catecholamines, a specific type of chemical class. In the body, there are different type of receptors in tissues which bind catechols with different effects. Dopamine and doubtamine have different affinities for different receptors and thus can have different effects. Kind of like different types of baking sugars...They are all sugars but are used for special purposes and functions.See 1 more doctor answer
No other form: Presently, there is no other form of Dobutamine on the market. Generally, when Dobutamine is used, one is seeking immediate action of the drug, if the drug was administered through just about any other route, it would take longer to act and the delay in action is not desirable. This of course excludes CHF patients on chronic Dobutamine pump, my first sentence is directed at them.See 1 more doctor answer
Best to ask a nurse: Physician training and nurse training are very different. From a physician's perspective, I would want a nurse to monitor vital signs and cardiac telemetry. Nurses would obviously want to check on IV site, drug mixture, drug compatibility (if infusing more than one drug), etc.See 1 more doctor answer
Yes: But they should obviously run on different pumps so that they can each be titrated.
Dobutamine: Dobutamine is a medicine used by physicians to increase blood pressure usually in a heart that does not pump well. It may be used when a patient is in heart failure or has had a heart attack and works by helping the heart to beat stronger and faster. It is given intravenously by an infusion and has a range of doses. Sometimes it is used as a stress test in patients who cannot exercise.See 1 more doctor answer
