Do You Ovulate While On The Pill
On TriNessa, (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) wondering how effective it is at preventing pregnancy? Do you ovulate while taking the pill? I never miss pills and always take at 10:30.
You can.: Birth control pills (bcp's) are intended to suppress the ovaries and prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation. However, nothing is 100%. Failure rates for pregnancy with bcp's can be 1% to 5% depending on the particular pill and on the patient compliance. Skipping pills is the usual cause for failure, but ovulation (and pregnancy) can occur even when the pill is taken properly. ...Read more

You shouldn't be..: A lot of women say that they still feel ovulation occurring while they are on the pill, but if they are taking the pill on time/regularly/not missing pills - they are not ovulating. They may be experiencing some mild pain from something else (gi source, musculoskeletal source, etc). But ovulation shouldn't/doesn't occur in women who take their pills regularly. ...Read more
No ovulation: One does not ovulate while on birth control. In fact that is the exact purpose of birth control -- to prevent ovulation. Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time) is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time. If you are not satisfied or it continues to happen then consider using a different birth control method. ...Read more
Often does not occur: Most birth control pills, when taken on schedule, do prevent ovulation. Even if ovulation occurs conception may still be prevented as the hormones in the pill thicken the cervical mucus, preventing entry of sperm into the uterus. They can also change the lining and motility of the fallopian tubes such that the egg is not transported to the uterus. ...Read more
Yes: The pill is about 99% effective in preventing pregnancy when used precisely according to instructions, but it is not completely bulletproof. All birth control methods (other than hysterectomy) have an associated small % risk of failure with subsequent conception. So the bottom line is - yes - it is possible to ovulate while on the pill. Go see your gynecologist; if pregnant, pill exposure is ok. ...Read more
If your on the pill, does that prevent your body from ovulating? Or does your body still continue to do so?
If you were to ovulate on the pill, how would you know when you would ovulate? By how long your cycle is? I have a 28 day cycle.
If you were to ovulate on the pill how would you know when you would be most fertile. Say you are on a 28 day pack?
Hard to know: I don't believe there have been any studies looking at ovulation times on the pill because it is supposed to prevent ovulation. So to answer your question, the only way to know when you would be most fertile is to know "if" you ovulated and when, by using an ovulation test or measuring your am temperature and watch for a spike in temp. You can't tell in hindsight however. Sorry! ...Read more
On the pill. Is white discharge normal to experience? Especially during time you would be ovulating? Do you ovulate on the pill?
Discharge: Remember when you ovulate you have a chance if pregnancy. Now not unusual for the body to change the caginal secretions. Most likely this us what you are experiencing especially if no other symtoms. ...Read more
I was on the pill for 10 yr. Am I ovulating if my cycles are 25-36 days long, and still have regular type of a period with each cycle?
Probably 'yes': If your periods are irregular, you are almost certainly ovulating, but not ovulating consistently. It can be very difficult to know when you ovulate with irregular cycles, you may wish to sort this out with a gyn doctor in-office. ...Read more
Is ovulation pain on the pill possible? Getting discomfort (not exactly pain) around the pelvic area on my left side in the middle of my cycle.
Yes: Occasionally with the very low dose hormonal birth control pills these days a breakthrough ovulation can potentially occur. Usually thr endometrial lining isn't supportive for a conception though. Make sure you take the birth control pill almost at the same time each day and some antibiotics may decrease the efficacy of the oral contraceptive pill. ...Read more
I get ewcm (thick clear jelly discharge) while on the combined contraceptive. Is the pill not working and im ovulating while on the pill?
Not uncommon: Ovulation while on the pill is actually very common. The pill prevents pregnancy more by preventing the uterus from developing an endometrial lining (where your pregnancy attaches). Its contraceptive effect is due to several factors, decreased cervical mucus, thin endometrial lining, preventing ovulation. Cervical mucus can still develop though. ...Read more
I can tell that I still ovulate on the pill (ovral). I get a low fever (~99.1) & change in discharge. Is this normal and nothing to worry about?
Not diagnostic: Minor temperature fluctuation and discharge do not confirm that you are ovulating, which is not terribly common on the pill. You'd need to talk with your doctor though; if you are ovulating you are at risk to get pregnant. ...Read more

On birth control Reclipsen, but once or twice a month I notice a big increase in discharge. If I'm not suppose to ovulate on the pill, what causes this?
Various causes: You are correct that one does not ovulate on birth control. Discharge varies for most women. Does the birth control pill cause a woman not to ovulate? And if so, why does a woman still have periods while on the pill?
OC: Correct! Virtually 100% of the time if properly taken at the same time every day. Your body thinks you ovulated since the hormones on the pill are similar hormones to the ones you make but in higher amounts so when you stop them, your body thinks you are not pregnant and bleeds. ...Read more
