Regional Anesthesia: Any form of regional anesthesia would suffice for this procedure. You can have spinal or epidural anesthesia. In spinal or epidural a needle is inserted into your back. Continue the codeine: I would recommend that you continue the codeine thru the surgery. On at the morning of surgery take your medications with a sip of water. Make sure that the anesthesiologist is aware of your codeine intake.* He/She MUST know you are taking a narcotic (codeine) prior to surgery. You MUST tell the anesthesiologist the dose and frequency of administration. You may taper the codeine after surgery. ...Read more

With an : Epidural the medication can be given very slowly, but with both you are given intravenous fluids prior and intravenous medications are given to rapidly correct any problems.
