In a child?: True breath holding spells are always in response to pain or anger and are basically a glorified temper tantrum and need to be ignored. If this does not describe the situation, then i would guess that there is manipulation going on and seeing a counselor would be helpful. ...Read more

Perhaps: There have been many reports of people with tourette's having breath-holding episodes. It is my understanding that tourette's is frequently associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder(ocd); and compulsive, breath-holding is sometimes a part of ocd. So whether due to tourette's or ocd i cannot say, but there certainly may be an indirect connection if not directly due to tourette's. ...Read more

Breath holding: This is concerning because 1. Why is she in pain? And 2. Breath holding spells are not common in kids under 6 months of age. Are you sure this is what is going on? They are more common during emotional outbursts but again at 3 months you need to make sure this is not something else that can be easily diagnosed by you provider.
