What are possible complications from septoplasty? I'm about to schedule a septoplasty. My surgeon keeps saying complications are rare. I get that, but i'd just like to be prepared in case I'm one of the rare ones..
Risks: Risks include but are not limited to anaesthetic related complications, bleeding, septal perforation, over-resection that can lead to saddle deformity (loss of dorsal support), synechia formation (internal scar bands), rarely alteration in smell acuity, and temporary numbness and tingling in the upper central dentition. ...Read more
I've heard septoplasty can cause horrible headaches. Is that true? Will they be worse than the headaches I already get from not being able to breathe? I've read some comments from people who got them that suggest they were much worse. How long would they
I: I do think some people can get a headache from the procedure. Septoplasty can be uncomfortable, but the discomfort does resolve. I would be careful that your headaches may be from something else rather than the problems breathing. That would be a rare cause of headache. A risk of surgery would be that the breathing gets better, but the headache remains. There is a controversial diagnosis called "contact headache" that is thought to be from contact between the septum and the turbinates, deep in the nose. This can be diagnosed by numbing that area during the headache--if the pain resolves with the placement of lidocaine, you may do well with the surgery to separate the contact point. As surgeons, we should remember that there is a risk that "surgery for pain causes pain.". ...Read more
Will recovery time be longer if I have septoplasty and rhinoplasty together? I don't absolutely need the rhinoplasty, but as long as I need the septoplasty I wanted to get it done. But I can't justify taking too much extra time off work if the recovery wi
Rhinoplasty: Having a rhinoplasty is a big decision. Your nose is on your face and the changes will be seen by you daily. It takes at least a year to recover from rhinoplasty. Discuss these issues with your surgeon and be sure your surgeon is a board certified facial plastic surgeon with expertise in these procedures. ...Read more
Not Necessarily: Both rhinoplasty and septoplasty can be done in an "open" or "closed" approach. In a "closed" approach, all incisions are made inside the nose and all the stitches will all be inside the nose. You will not get a scar on the outside. If this is an important concern for you, make sure you have a consultation with a surgeon who has a lot of experience doing the "closed" approach. ...Read more
When you get a septoplasty and turbinate reduction, can you have rhinoplasty done to shape the outside?
Yes.: Http://www. Facialplastics. Info/rhinoplasty.html it's very common for a person to undergo a rhinoplasty in conjunction with turbinate reduction or septoplasty surgery. There is no added risk of performing the surgeries together, though recovery time may be extended slightly before a patient can see and feel optimal results. ...Read more

Talk to your surgeon: After any operation, if you have any concern related to that surgery, you should seek advice from them. My brother is Having a hard time peeing after a septoplasty. Is this normal? He does get the urge to pee when he tries it comes out little by little.
Be checked now...: Nasal septoplasty itself should not induce voiding difficulty, but general anesthesia + IV infusion may unintentionally & inadvertently overstretch the bladder leading to bladder muscle dysfunction. So, go to be checked so to assure not developing pending urinary retention as soon as possible; do not try to wait it out. ...Read more

Nasal congestion: Post op congestion can be related to nasal dryness and crusting, turbinate swelling or persistent septal deviation if you accidentally bumped your nose. I had a septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery, but I still get alternate nostril block entire day and night and the intensity of blockage keeps varying. What should I do?
Evaluate allergies: It is quite normal for blockage to vary during the day due to the autonomic nervous system and change in vascular congestion from one side to the other. However for this to cause complete blockage following surgery requires a more thorough evaluation of your possible allergies as well as decongestants and steroid nasal sprays. Discuss with allergist or ent. W. ...Read more
Septoplasty: You can absolutely have a septoplasty and rhinoplasty performed at the same time - in fact it is very common. Doesn't hurt to get more than one opinion when considering rhinoplasty. Hope this helps! ...Read more
How can I get treated for IV antibiotic/steroid? I think I'm an extreme case bcause of not having a spleen. Please help? I had a septoplasty/turbinectomy back in june of 2011. I had blood crusting for 2 months after surgery. I started having problems
I: I understand your concerns, and I am sorry you have had to go through such a lengthy illness. Patients without spleens are at risk for worsening infections. Patients who are asplenic are usually advised to get Pneumovax and other immunizations so your doctor has probably advised that in the past. If your symptoms are worsening, then it would be reasonable to discuss your treatment again with your doctor. The medications you are on sound appropriate, and it is good that you are on nasal steroids as well. I hope your symptoms improve soon. ...Read more
Can a septoplasty cure snoring? I'm weighing the pros and cons of getting a septoplasty. My doctor wants me to get one, but I don't usually have that much trouble breathing. But I do snore quite loudly. If septoplasty could help, that would be a huge pro
Snoring and septum: Which doctor, your pcp or ent, is recommending? In most studies septoplasty does nothing to cure snoring. Septoplasty "staightens" the wall between the two nasal passages to make airflow more smooth, but turbulent airflow it corrects is a minor source of snoring. It does nothing to stop the rumbling of the soft tissues of the palate and tongue--the most significant sources of snoring. ...Read more

Can I have a septoplasty and tonsillectomy done together? I've been putting off getting a septoplasty, but I've been having more trouble breathing lately, so I guess it's time. Also, my doctor now says I have enlarged tonsils and should get them taken out
Both: Both surgeries can safely be performed together. The obvious advantages are one operation instead of two, with associated decreased total cost (indirect or direct), and less missed total time off from work/school. The disadvantage will more likely be seen if you require nasal packing, are forced to mouth breath only, thereby increasing throat dryness and local discomfort. For patients who are claustrophobic or have difficulty with forced mouth breathing this can be a harder recovery. Clearly, the pain experience will be dictated by the tonsillectomyand likely take about two weeks to abate. ...Read more
