Yes: Artificial tears are replacement drops for individuals whose tear production may be low or if their tasks result in high evaporative tear loss, such as reading, computer use, windy activities outside to name a few. Many commercially available tear replacement drops are available, and all work satisfactorily. If more severe dry eye problems exist, see an eye md for help. ...Read more
Yes: Both brands have different formulations: some are just artificial tears, and some 'get the red out'. The 'red out' ones have vasoconstrictors in them that make the eye look white for a time, but don't address the reason why the eye is red in the first place (e.g., dry eye, allergic eye), and the eye vessels often bounce back to full redness after the drop wears off, especially when used daily. ...Read more
Briefly: Visine drops, of the 'gets the red out' kind, will diminish the red of the eyes but the redness will return fairly quickly. So it is better to use the other type, eye lubricating drops which will help the eye heal and get rid of the redness in a more healthful way. If persistent and especially if the vision is changing, then see your ophthalmologist. ...Read more

No, but...: You should not be using visine frequently. There are ointments to moisturize the eye, such as refresh pm, lacrilube, (artificial tears) and (better for occasional daytime use) genteal gel. There are also drops that are more gel-like, such as systane gel, but it comes in a bottle, and is similar to other eyedrops. ...Read more

Is visine (eye drops) poison if swallowed? What does the hospital do when they get a poison case like this?
Poison Control Cntr: Er's consult with a national poison control center on how to handle cases like this. Visine has tetrahydrozoline, which can act as a stimulant. How long do you have to wait to put on contacts after using visine "red eye" eye drops? Do you wait at all?
No.: For the most part, I do not recommend visine "red eye" drops. If one abuses these drops by using them too frequently, they actually get the "red in" instead of getting the "red out." however, for this particular drop there is no need to wait. If you want to be safe, as a matter of course you can use 10 minutes as a safe guide to how long you should wait after placing any sort of drop in your eye. ...Read more
Should my friend be concerned about accumulation of fluid in her eye after cataract surgery? She believes the fluid may result from eye drops she's taking. Those are: bromday, predforte, and vigamox.
She needs to see her surgeon. In the vast majority of cases, there should be no issues like this. How come she can't get ahold of her surgeon? This makes no sense to me. It's a shame that you have to go online to ask this question for your friend instead of having her call her surgeon directly and resolving the issue in minutes.
In my practice, all surgical patients are given my email and cell phone number. That is what I would want if I were the patient! ...Read more
Can I use eye drops to treat the redness from pink eye? I'm using an antibiotic cream from my doctor to cure my pink eye, but it doesn't treat the redness. Is it safe to use visine or something similar to make my eyes less bloodshot? .
During: During the course of response to an infection the eyes will become red from dilated blood vessels responding to the inciting agent. Any use of drops to get rid of the red may at times irritate and burn the eye more on application and may have a contra-effect. I recommend using less irritating preservative-free artificial tears such as refresh to help improve the redness. This will be a slow but less irritating process. ...Read more
