Do neurotransmitter levels return to normal after getting over depression?

Do neurotransmitter levels return to normal after getting over depression?

Levels not abnormal: Many people don't realize there is no documented "chemical imbalance" in depression — no measurable differences in neurotransmitter levels in depressed vs nondepressed subjects. That's why there's no blood test for depression. What we do know is that antidepressants change the levels of neurotransmitters, and this is associated with beneficial effects. The effect ends when the meds are stopped. ...Read more

The mechanism of: action for ECT is not completely understood. Many years ago people who when into diabetic coma sometimes had a lifting of depression so insulin was first used. Electricity was next used to produce a seizure which is what seems to help. Today the pt is sedated and the treatment is much easier. The post seizure state seems to be what helps. Is it normal to get depression after coming back from a trip like as if you want to be back over there?

Trip: This is a good question and one i often hear from patients. It is hard returning to reality and having the responsibilities of your life set back in. Vacations are important and great for taking a break from your stress, but that doesn't mean it wipes out the stress completely while you are there. Therefore, although common, please seek help if these feelings don't subside or worsen. ...Read more

It sure can: Sometimes, folks take opiates (or other drugs of abuse including alcohol) in order to help themselves feel better due to an underlying problem such as depression or anxiety. In fact, this has been called: "self medicating." so maybe, you felt better with opiates because they helped your depression. You may benefit from an antidepressant medication. I recommend a psychiatric evaluation. Good luck. ...Read more

Increase in anxiety, mild depression after stopping Lithium cold turkey. I must ask, when will this stop and I get back to my normal self?

Unclear: This is usually given for a bipolar diagnosis. I am not sure why this was stopped cold turkey but the anxiety and mild depression may get worse. It may resolve but will take time to sort itself out. By the end of one month you should have some idea. The problem however should be under the care of a doc since this was stopped abruptly. Maybe your psychiatrist. Best wishes. ...Read more

Whenever depression strikes so bad, i tend to oversleep for nearly 11 hours a day wth fatigue. What to do in order to restore normal energy levels?

Wellbutrin (bupropion): One possibility of treatment is wellbutrin, (bupropion) in cases like this. But for many reasons, it could be not an option in your case. Also, we should know if trials with the meds you mentioned were sufficient in lenght and dosing. Atypical depression is another possibility to consider; it has a different treatment approach. Ask your dr if any of this may apply in your case. Best wishes. ...Read more

Lithium levels normal, but still having symptoms of depression and voices. Doctor not much help, nothing more she can do. What do I do now?

Find another doc?: Seriously, there are several other things to do, i don't know why your doc would say otherwise. Often a second med is added to treat the voices, either an atypical neuroleptic or another mood stabilizer. If depression is the main problem, an antidepressant (or lamictal, a mood stabilizer especially good for depression) is sometimes added. Bottom line: you needs a medication re-evaluation. ...Read more

It's OK to cry: You are right. Crying doesn't always mean depression. Uncontrollable crying or frequent crying spells, however, can be a symptom of Depression and deserves careful attention. Financial problems and health issues can be a trigger for an episode of Depression and should be evaluated. I recommend you talk to your doctor. It may help to talk about what you are going through. ...Read more
