Testing for colon cancer? Are there any tests besides the colonoscopy? I really don’t want to have to use those colon cleaning laxatives. I had to once before and felt really sick from them. Isn’t there another test?

There : There are actually two separate questions here. The first is whether there area alternative tests besides colonoscopy. There are other tests; but each one has limits. Testing stool for blood can identify cancers; but is not a good preventative test. The real goal is to find polyps before they become malignant. Work is underway on tests that try to analyze dna found in stool to look for markers of abnormal growths. It is an exciting area; but the current tests are not accurate enough and far too expensive. The alternative to colonoscopy that is designed to find polyps without insertion of a colonoscope is ct colography or "virtual colonoscopy". However, it also requires a preparation; and is both more uncomfortable and less accurate than the colonoscopy. The second question you asked deals with the preparation itself. Talk to your physician. There are several newer preparations that entail much smaller volumes of preparation liquid over longer times than we used to use in the past. Most people find it easy and very tolerable. I know i did for my exams. ...Read more

Does colonoscopy interfere with birth control pill effectiveness? Especially the prep laxative that cleans your colon

Does colonoscopy interfere with birth control pill effectiveness? Especially the prep laxative that cleans your colon

Likely to interfere: I am not sure any studies have been done to actually confirm the effect of bowel prep on BCP, but anything that significantly alters the diet or digestion, including antibiotics, have been known to interfere with absorption of the pill. Other variables include the timing of the cycle, etc. I recommend back up protection for the remainder of the month. ...Read more

I took two laxatives Wednesday, three Thursday, and two today. If I don't take anymore laxatives could I still screw my colon up?

I took two laxatives Wednesday, three Thursday, and two today. If I don't take anymore laxatives could I still screw my colon up?

Probably not: you will most likely be OK. Be careful on how much laxatives you take. Maybe you will need to take a look at your diet. I wouldn't want to scare you but if this constipation is new, I would suggest not treating it yourself and talk to a doctor to make sure you don't have more symptoms or risk factors for more severe problems like colon cancer. ...Read more

Apparent colon blockage for the last 2 1/2 weeks. Er tried an enama & laxative last friday, didn't work. What now?

Is there REAL block?: The key word is "apparent." the colon may not be squeezing normally, from: nearby inflammation, virus infection, poor nervous system communication from/to brain/gut, diabetes, low thyroid, lack of water and fiber, low roughage diet, lack of exercise ... Etc. True blockages come from scarring, tumors, cancers, pressure from outside the colon, kinking. Colonoscopy by a good dr. Needed. Good luck. ...Read more
