Will I have to take medication for the rest of my life if I have bipolar disorder?

Will I have to take medication for the rest of my life if I have bipolar disorder?

Maybe: It depends on the severity of your condition and what happens when there is an exacerbation of your condition. If you only buy a few extra things every so often when you have mild manic episodes, that is different then if you every five years you try and drive the car over a cliff. Many w/ bipolar d/o do best if they avoid antidepressants long term and try to maintain with mood stabilizers. ...Read more

I'm going to the doctors tomorrow and I am wondering what to say in order to get medication for my depression and anxiety. I have never taken action ?

Be sure to tell: the Dr about all your symptoms, and if he agrees that you are anxious and depressed enough, I'm sure he will prescribe you medication for both. An SSRI drug like zoloft or paxil (paroxetine) would be a good start. It works for both anxiety and depression. ...Read more

How do I know if i still have depression and how would it be suggested to live day to day without medication? (don't like the feeling of medicine)

Depends: Depression is treated by medication, not cured. Depression is a chronic condition for those how suffer from it. After a first or second episode it is reasonable to consider withdrawing treatment. Risk of recurrence after a third episode is 90% therefore lifetime treatment is recommended after the third episode. ...Read more

I am unable to lose weight and the hot flashes are worse in the summer. I would like to go off tamoxen for the summer! what do you think?

Continue : I would continue the tamoxifen if your oncologists recommends this. I would not suggest stopping and restarting. Consider using something non-hormonal for the -bothersome hot flashes-gabapentin or Celexa (citalopram) would be reasonable. Increasing exercise will be helpful for both issues. I hope you feel better soon! ...Read more

I take cetirizine daily for general allergies. If I forget to take or attempt to quit I suffer from severe itching and rashes. What to do?

Cetirizine help both: Cetirizine is a good antihistamine for at least lessening itch, which lessens scratching, which probably aggravates youe rash. As long as it doesn't cause side effects (mostly drowsiness) no problem taking long term. Other option is to see a board certiified allergist to try to identify and treat the causes of both your "generalized allergies" and your skin problem. ...Read more

I haven't been able to sleep well for the past week or so. This is starting to really depress me. What is the best medication to take to fall asleep?

Exercise: Exercise with good sleep hygiene is in my experience best for sound sleep. Reviewing your medicine I see Xanax (alprazolam) listed. Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine, a class of drugs well known to alter the sleep-wake cycle. If you suffer from a serious psychiatric condition please talk to your psychiatrist about your lack of sleep. ...Read more

What meds would be good to take for adhd/add, anxiety & bipolar/depression, I am going to my dr and I want to run a few options by him?

Hodgepodge!: Mental, behavioral health conditions tend to co-exist, but sometimes it is just one primary diagnostic that is responsibler for all the symptoms.Rather that thinking medication first let your doctor conduct a thorough history and exam, and based on his findings and expericience recommend a treatment plan.Behavioral intervention, exercise, diet, sleep and of course medications could help. ...Read more

What do you suggest if i would like to go off my anti psychotics and take herbal antipsychotics. How many days will it take to finaly sleep after going off?

Please don't do this: There is no such thing as "herbal antipsychotic." It won't work and potentially very dangerous (not studied by anyone so could be unsafe). There is high chance you will get very sick off your medication. I am a med student of first year, and i want to know which is the minimun time i have to sleep to develope well, be awake and survive, i really want the minimun?

Highly variable: The amount of sleep you need to perform at your best varies from person to person. Also, it's possible to "get away" with less sleep for shorter periods of time, but getting insufficient sleep has a cumulative negative effect. The amount needed varies from more than the average 8 hours to much less for a very few who have a different genetic requirement. Mid afternoon sleepiness is a good monitor. ...Read more
