I had a mirena iud implanted on Monday Oct 23rd on the 8th day of my cycle. My barrier method of contraception (condom) broke during sexual intercourse Tuesday Oct 24th and I am very concerned. Will I need to take emergency contraception? Or will the m
No: An IUD works as emergency contraception, if a woman gets an IUD after having sex. If she already had an IUD before sex, then that is very good contraception, so no back-up method is needed to prevent pregnancy. If she keeps worrying about pregnancy, she can do a home urine pregnancy test. Tests are inexpensive, very accurate, and sold in stores everywhere. Adding condoms helps prevent infections. ...Read more
If trying to get...: If trying to get pregnant (presuming 28 day cycles), be sure to have sex twice a day starting from day 11-12, for six days. Be happy, enjoy life, and don't think about pregnancy too much. It will happen when it happens, and if half a year goes by with nothing happening, then ask the doctor about it. Start on prenatal vitamins, to help prevent certain types of birth defects when pregnancy happens. ...Read more

This is not normal: and should be evaluated. There are a number of potential issues and without an examination these can not be differentiated. Make an appointment with your GYN health care provider ASAP or go to an ER if the pain and bleeding continues. ...Read more
Considering getting a Mirena IUD. How long does the insertion take? How much pain can I expect to have with the insertion and in the days that follow? I haven't had any children.
Good choice: Mirena will give you consistent contraception for 5 years. Since you have not had any children, insertion may be somewhat difficult but not impossible. Your provider will be able to offer advice/suggestions on how to minimize the discomfort. Under optimum circumstances, insertion takes about 1-3 minutes or so, the discomfort, subsides quickly, in a day or so. I hope this helps. Best Wishes ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I am getting a mirena IUD next week. Should i ask for xanax (alprazolam)? And how much ibuprofin should I take beforehand? I've never had kids and I am 20.
Not necessarily: Unless you have an established anxiety disorder, you shouldn't need xanax (alprazolam). The insertion of the iud is quick; most women will feel a quick pinch when it is implanted. Some will have irritation of their cervix which can cause cramping. I would wait until after the procedure to see whether you need ibuprofen. ...Read more

Pregnancy with IUD: Sounds like you both are not on the same page. I recommend that you see a marriage counselor to resolve this because no matter what happens one of you will resent the other (more). Pregnancy can happen after 5 years but sometimes the presence of the IUD, no matter how old, can prevent pregnancy. If she were to conceive, IUD removal can cause a miscarriage. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What would cause a heavy period like flow after removal of Mirena IUD? Was under the understanding that it kept lining thin.
Age 60 & heavy flow: If indeed you are 60 years of age. removing the Mirena IUD was sorely needed. Moreover, heavy bleeding post Mirena at any age raises the question of abnormal endometrial proliferation. It would be a good idea for your GYN MD to take an endometrial sampling (biopsy) to rule out endometrial hyperplasia which can lead to endometrial/uterine cancer. ...Read more

Hey there! I see you're a gynecologist, so I'd expect you might have some knowledge about the Mirena IUD. Is it ok to cum inside my SO? She has one.
With her permission: Yes, you can if she is conducive to your desire as well. Thank goodness that she has taken contraceptive strides with the Mirena iUD to eliminate inadvertent conception. There are rare reported instances whereby the IUD string is left too long and tampons or other intra vaginal inserted items (you) get wrapped around the string and inadvertently "pull out" the IUD on withdrawal. Again, it's rare. ...Read more
