Do Hallucinogenic Mushrooms Alter Serotonin Levels
Magic mushrooms: Hallucinogenic mushrooms in the psilocybe genus do impact the serotonin system. They contain psilocybin and a related metabolite, which are structurally related to serotonin and are about 100 times less potent than lsd. Partial agonist activity at 5-ht2a receptors mediates the psychedelic effect of hallucinogens like psilocybin, lsd, and mescaline (found in peyote). ...Read more
Depends: If used occasionally in people without other health problems, hallucinogens rarely have major health effects. However, they cause elevated pulse, which in people with underlying arteriosclerosis of coronary or cerebral arteries, it can precipitate heart attack or stroke. In patients with underlying psychiatric disease, hallucinogens can cause more serious psychotic reactions. ...Read more
Same risks As withou: Same risks of taking them without a transplant. In addition if there is some sort of fungus or bacteria associated with the product this could increase the risk of infection in an immunosuppressed transplant patient. In any case there is certainly no information about this question based on any kind of scientific study. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not cause, but feel: Insufficient performance of serotonin can cause pain to be felt as more severe and less easy to relieve. It's not a 'cause' but things that might not hurt if your levels were adequate - will perhaps. Also your reaction to the pain might be more intense and out of control. Have a psych eval, Dx and Tx. ...Read more
Increases it: It has been proven that 8 weeks of exercise is as effective as 8 weeks of antidepressants on reducing symptoms of depression. It is presumed that exercise does this by raising the amount of available serotonin in our brain. Precisely how it does it is still being worked out. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not sure "exactly": Without "exact" measurements of serotonin levels in people who use mdma, it's hard to quantify numerically. But, mdma binds to serotonin transporters in the brain that when functioning normally, remove serotonin from the synapse (space between neurons). The result is increased & prolonged serotonin signal. Also mdma can enter the neuron & cause excessive serotonin release. All this = neurotoxic. ...Read more

SSRI + carbos see be: The dietary supplement 5-htp (5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan) is promoted as a treatment for insomnia, depression, migraine, obesity and attention deficit disorder in children. It is a derivative of the Amino Acid tryptophan and, in fact, the body makes it from the tryptophan present in beef, chicken, fish, dairy products and other high protein foods. Think yours are low?: This is about the nervous system. What makes you think your "levels" are low? Neurotransmitters don't HAVE "levels". They don't just float around or circulate in blood. They're made in the terminal boutons of neurons, released into the synaptic cleft, & immediately either recycled & replaced or taken back up. Neurochemistry isn't just a New Age fad. REAL knowledge is power. Go arm yourself. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Why is it that everything that raises my serotonin levels overstimulates me and everything that helps insomnia raises serotonin levels. ?
Many reasons: Simply put, there are many receptors for serotonin (like 7 and counting). But every drug does not necessarily interact with every single subtype of serotonin receptor. Plus, the drug may excite some subtypes while inhibiting others. So if you think about the number of different combinations that could theoretically be produced... hope that helps, be well : ) ...Read more
If serotonin is a hormone of "happiness" then how come is it low when we're in love?
Do all infatuated people have low levels of serotonin?
Love & serotonin: I think this shows that the experience of "love" is much more complex than serotonin levels -- and also that infatuation is not completely blissful. Consider the constant checking for messages from a new flame, and the agony if the desired lover doesn't return one's feelings or interest. There's both an obsessive quality to it, and there is suffering. Similar neurotransmitter issues in ocd. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
