For the last 2 months I've been having heart palpitations. I do drink a 5 hour energy shot each day, and drink a lot of soda. I am very worried about it?
Hard to say: I find no nutritional or other value in "energy" drinks. That said, there is no good way to answer your question. If I listen to a patient often enough in his/her life I will often hear an innocent heart murmur that has no significance. They have nothing wrong with their heart & the murmur just reflects blood flow. If they had any heart defect related murmur, such drinks would be a bad idea ...Read more

Could me drinking energy drinks excessively be making my heart beat feel more prominent? I drink upto 5 cans of monster a day. Have previously been hos
Yes. From Caffeine.: These "energy drinks" actually give you NO energy but a lot of caffeine (read the label) -- often a days' worth in 1 can! Caffeine is a (mild) stImulant, but in enough quantities it can cause irregular heart beats which may be the 'prominence' you describe. You can do a simple test: cut back gradually on caffeinated drinks over 1-2 months & then see if your symptoms are better. Takes willpower, th ...Read more
Severe damage done by taking 2 stimulants? Accidentally took 40 MG Focalin w/ energy drink. Heart racing & sweating profusely. Better now.
Panic attack? Or heart arrythmia? Hey, I was working in a hot factory a few months ago when my heart starting beating fast and I panicked and called the er. They said that I was fine. Then I drank a big energy drink, heart starting pounding, chest pain.
Panic/anxiety: From the question you certainly had an episode of anxiousness or a panic attack. Common with such episodes is heart palpitations, and in the middle of feeling this way it may be misconstrued as an arrhythmia. The hot ambient temperature probably did not cause this, but it certainly can exacerbate the situation. Drinking a big slug of caffeine is not a good way to help just after an episode. No: While it is true that taurine is an important building block for protein and is necessary for good brain, heart and blood vessel function, there is no evidence that supplementing with taurine can prevent or reverse heart disease. Correspondingly, the amount that might be needed is completely unknown and, if found to be beneficial, likely to be much more than what is contained in Monster drinks. ...Read more
Coughing x 3 weeks. Initially productive now dry. Have air gulping and palpitations and low energy. Can heart problems cause coughing?
Can do: Yes, heart problems can cause a cough-specifically congestive heart failure, a condition in which fluid builds up in lungs due to various forms of heart dysfunction. Usually accompanying this diagnosis is shortness of breath with activity as well as sob in bed such that one has to prop up the head of the bed at night to breathe. If these are occurring then best to get checked out by your pcp. ...Read more
Depends: There are a large group of people with innocent heart murmurs that will not have any specific effect from such drinks. A few, with complex murmurs, (usually from congenital heart disease)should/would have been warned by their docs to avoid stimulants. Not knowing how this applies to you limits the answer. Maybe you should ask your doc. ...Read more
Looking for any advice regarding the negative effect energy drinks have on heart rate. I have chosen this topic for my 8th grade Science Fair project?
Go to the library: If you are a kid in the 8th grade, you are too young to ask questions on HealthTap. If you are and adult asking for them, we consider energy drinks poor choices for most, but there is not enough space in the answer block to detail why. ...Read more
It is possible: There were several deaths of young people, probably more from heart rhythm disturbances than "heart attack" related to use of energy drinks. They are not all the same - some have the amount of caffeine in a strong cup of coffee, others have way more. Caffeine is ok in modest doses, don't exceed it. Fatigue is a message from your body- not listening to it and throwing in more caffeine isn't good. ...Read more
