Do Black People Get Acne
I am a lighter skinned african american, I've had acne and from bothering it I get these yucky dark spots... What can I do to make them go away?
PIH or dark spots: It sounds like something called "post inflammatory hyperpigmentation" or pih. The pigment producing cells get irritated by the inflammation and spew out more pigment, causing a dark spot. Often these will go away if you give it enough time. To speed things up, I often prescribe a combination of hydroquinone cream, retin a (tretinoin) and kojic acid. Neocutis makes a product called 'perle" that works too. ...Read more

I am african american, I am not on health insurance to see a dermatologist. What are good home remedies to clear up acne and dark spots?
Dermatology consult: Scarring acne in a young black woman is especially difficult and I would urge you to get without delay to a professional dermatologist. All acne can be managed nowadays with scientific medicine and it's very unfortunate that you were allowed to develop scars. "pop" and over-the-counter treatments probably will not be sufficient; until you can get seen, benzoyl peroxide is your friend. ...Read more
I'm a 40yr old african american female that has dry sensitive skin& facial acne, my friend suggested clarisonic does this machine and product work?
Clarisonic Skin Care: A clarisonic skin care device produces more effective results than without it. The ultrasonic action of a clarisonic cleaning device can cleanse your skin more thoroughly than using your hands or a wash cloth. The infusion device can drive skin serums more deeply and effectively penetrate the skin better than without the device. You can cleanse your skin without it, but with it is superior. ...Read more

I am 27, african american with mild acne and eczema, that is sensitive with hyper-pigmentation from the eczema. What is the best treatment for me?
Black dot acne: Those black dots are most likely open comedones, the fancy words for blackheads. These are actually brown, and turn color because enzymes in the skin turn them that color. It is not from being dirty. Gentle washcloth action in the shower, exfoliants like retinol and Retin-A and acne cleanings at your dermatologist's office will help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I have acne from the age of 16 (I m 23 now) and dandruff too. Recently my acne started gettin worse & thr r painful black patches on both sides of nose?
Mixed issues...: One might be worsening the other one. You might need anti fungal and antibiotic treatment in order to help with both conditions. I have black heads on my chest and some acne on my back, is there anyway to get rid of the black heads and reduce the redness of acne?
Scientific Rx: I see that you are already taking topical benzyl peroxide and minocycline. One possibility might be to add a topical retinoic acid derivative which you'll use on face and trunk. This might be in place of the benzoyl peroxide. Your physician is your best guide here. I'm sorry you ended up with scarring; if your acne become unmanageable, consider isotreinoin if offered. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
