Do antibiotics effect the effectiveness of mirena (levonorgestrel)?

Do antibiotics effect the effectiveness of mirena (levonorgestrel)?

Not really: Mirena (levonorgestrel) is a progesterone-secreting iud (intrauterine device). The Progesterone is distributed systemically through the body and is metablized by the liver. Some drugs, including antibiotics can speed up the metabolism of the progesterone, but this shouldn't decrease its effectiveness. Theoretically, you may get spotting. It also acts to prevent implantation, which is not affected by antibioti. ...Read more

What effects, if any, do antibiotics have on hormones in the mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD? Does it reduce effectiveness similar to that of oral bcps?

What effects, if any, do antibiotics have on hormones in the mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD? Does it reduce effectiveness similar to that of oral bcps?

Likely no effect.: Few, if any, of the commonly used antibiotics will have any effect bcp efficacy. However, there are some antibiotics (used primarily to treat tuberculosis — tb) that can decrease the effectiveness of bcp's. It is not likely that any of those antibiotics (even those used to treat tb) would have any impact on the efficacy of the Mirena (levonorgestrel) or any of the other progestin only contraceptives (the shot). ...Read more

I'm on the Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD and taking an antibiotic (Sulfamethoxazole). Can I get pregnant?

Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD: No the antibiotics will not decrease the effectiveness of the Mirena (levonorgestrel). But like any contraceptive method, the IUD does have a low baseline rate of pregnancy. So yes you may get pregnant (very low risk) but if you do, it won't be because of the antibiotics. ...Read more

Not likely: Iud's are one of the most effective forms of birth control. Irregular or absent periods are an expected side effect. Failure rates are 1%. Anytime you suspect pregnancy take a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available at any pharmacy. If your test is positive you should see your doctor urgently because of the risk of tubal pregnancy (ectopic pregnancy). ...Read more

Do antibiotics affect birth control, specifically IUDs? I'm on Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and have a Mirena IUD.

Do antibiotics affect birth control, specifically IUDs? I'm on Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and have a Mirena IUD.

Not to worry: All IUDs prevent pregnancy, and antibiotics don't interfere with them. Mirena (levonorgestrel) combines the usual action of an IUD with the hormonal effects of the progesterone-type drug included with it. A few antibiotics can affect the hormone's effectiveness, but most won't, including ciprofloxacin. ...Read more

If I take e-mycin (anitbiotic), will it make my mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD less effective?

Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD: Iuds work by changing the environment of the uterus, thickening the mucus so that sperm are less likely to fertilize an egg, and also by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall. Little research has been done on the lack of effectiveness of iud's when used with an antibiotic. ...Read more

Can I get pregnant while taking an antibiotic and have the mirana birth control?

Can I get pregnant while taking an antibiotic and have the mirana birth control?

Depends: If the Mirena (levonorgestrel) device is in place and not expelled the risk of pregnancy while on antibiotic is very low. Always check after menstrual period to make certain that the threads still protrude from the cervix/do not to pull on the threads as doing so may displace the intrauterine system. Report any prolonged bleeding/ fever/chills, abdominal pain/cramps to doctor. Practice safe sex use condoms. Take care. ...Read more

I have mirena (levonorgestrel) and Nikki. Does taking the Nikki lessen the effectiveness of the mirena (levonorgestrel). If I miss the pill one day doEs the mirena (levonorgestrel) still protect.?

I have mirena (levonorgestrel) and Nikki. Does taking the Nikki lessen the effectiveness of the mirena (levonorgestrel). If I miss the pill one day doEs the mirena (levonorgestrel) still protect.?

Why Both: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) should still protect you. WHY BOTH! It works by two methods. The first is a little less well understood, but an intrauterine device itself changes the uterine environment preventing implantation and pregnancy the Mirena (levonorgestrel) is Levonegestrol (progesterone) coated which hormonally prevents pregnancy. NIKKI is a comb E2/progestin OCP. It hormonally prevents ovulation. Follow missed pill rules. ...Read more

Can metronidazole inhibit mirena (levonorgestrel) effectiveness?

No: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is one of the BEST forms of birth control available, it lasts 5 years, is ~99.5% effective, and thins the uterine lining so that you get lighter periods. 20% of women will stop having periods after 1 year and that's perfectly healthy. Effects in the uterus and so it won't affect or be affected by other medicadtion; very safe method; biggest risk after insertion is expulsion (1-2%). ...Read more

What are the chances of my wife getting pregnant, she has had the Mirena IUD for the last 6 years and not willing to take it out. What I am looking for her to get pregnant so I am waiting when the IUD looses its effectiveness? Once she gets pregnant with

Pregnancy with IUD: Sounds like you both are not on the same page. I recommend that you see a marriage counselor to resolve this because no matter what happens one of you will resent the other (more). Pregnancy can happen after 5 years but sometimes the presence of the IUD, no matter how old, can prevent pregnancy. If she were to conceive, IUD removal can cause a miscarriage. ...Read more

Will mirena (levonorgestrel) coil help with menopause symptoms for someone in late 40s?

Will mirena (levonorgestrel) coil help with menopause symptoms for someone in late 40s?

No: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud releases Progesterone locally in the uterine cavity and is fda approved for contraception (up to 5 years) and for reducing heavy menstrual flow. The classic symptoms of menopause (hot flushes, night sweats, vag dryness, sleeplessness) would not be prevented by the mirena (levonorgestrel). ...Read more

Mirena put in 2.5 months ago. 6 wk check, no strings visible, u/s shows it's in right place. pinkish spotting mid cycle for the 1st time. concerned?

No cause for alarm: Since you are using one of the most effective methods of contraception, as long as the Mirena remains inside your uterus and causes you no pain, there is really no cause for alarm. Pinkish spotting and /or some changes in your menstrual cycles and vaginal bleeding are fairly common. ...Read more
