Polymerase Chain Reaction (Definition)

Polymerase chain reaction is a method of finding a specific piece of dna and copying it over and over again until there is enough to study. The technique allows a scientist to detect very small amounts of dna in a swab sample then reproduce enough of it to study it. It is very sensisitive for detecting the presence of certain bacteria and is also used in doing other ...Read more

Does HIV DNA PCR have different assays for the strains of hiv1 and hiv2?

Does HIV DNA PCR have different assays for the strains of hiv1 and hiv2?

Yes, but complicated: Trying to tell whether a person has HIV-1, HIV-2, or both, can get complicated. If a person has high risk exposures or has symptoms, he can see an HIV Infectious Disease doctor and trust the advice, but follow-up as instructed. There are many different tests (usually by various manufacturers) in different parts of the world, which happen to have different prevalences for various HIV strains. ...Read more

What are the odds of having a faulty HIV test? This includes antigen, PCR RNA tests, and antibody tests.

HIV testing...: 4th gen HIV testing and other tests are all fairly accurate. If there are concerns they can be repeated. If negative results 6 months after concerning exposure it is highly unlikely that results are inaccurate. Talk to your doctor about results if you are concerned and always remember to limit your risks with future sexual encounters: use protection, avoid high risk scenerios ...Read more

Is the HIV DNA PCR test accurate enough for early diagnosis?

Is the HIV DNA PCR test accurate enough for early diagnosis?

Yes: The PCR is highly accurate and sensitive. It may take 6 weeks to 6 months for the elisa and western blot antibody tests to be positive. Since the PCR tests for the virus itself, it is detectable earlier, before an immune response has been initiated, but at a much higher price. ...Read more

Window for hcv ab test and hcv rna test?

Window for hcv ab test and hcv rna test?

HCV: Nowadays with polymerase chain reaction technology it is making "window" periods a less discussed issue. In my practice if I suspected a recent infection (say days to weeks old)..this test would show virons in your blood. Once this virus hits your bloodstream it explodes exponentially. Some people are fortunate that their bodies contain the infection..most do not. ...Read more

How reliable are my negative results after 8 days? Hiv1 DNA PCR and elisa.

Too soon: Not reliable at all. I am shocked anyone would even offer you such a test before the test could possibly be valid! the HIV pcr test can be accurate after fourteen days. Most of us wait till day 21 after exposure to erase all doubts. You tested too soon! ...Read more

Hiv DNA PCR dectected on 4/08/13 and antibody negative.Still now 6/3/13 8 weeks later still show HIV anitbody negative. What are your thoughts? Is the PCR a false positive?

Hiv DNA PCR dectected on 4/08/13 and antibody negative.Still now 6/3/13 8 weeks later still show HIV anitbody negative. What are your thoughts? Is the PCR a false positive?

Not necessarily: Is it really the dna or the RNA pcr? The dna qualitative pcr is the most sensitive test and may become positive months before antibody is detected. The quantitative RNA pcr that is used for monitoring also becomes positive early. Antibodies may not develop until 3 months from the infection. So, they may still develop. If you have not seen a HIV physician and are not on art, see one asap. ...Read more
