What food can I eat with diverticulitis?

What food can I eat with diverticulitis?

Most anything: There has been alot of misinformation as to how diet relates to diverticulitis. Limiting certain foods such as seeds, popcorn etc used to be common but no scientific evidence exists that these foods caues bouts of diverticulitis. Eat a high fiber diet, drink plenty of fluids and avoid constipation.

Please suggest what food should you not eat to avoid getting diverticulitis after you have allready had it?

High fiber diet: There is no proven way to prevent a recurrent attack of diverticulitis. The old rule of avoiding nuts and seeds has been disproven. My experience tells me that avoiding constipation and eating a high fiber diet (such as oatmeal) or taking fiber supplements every day (such as benefiber or metamucil) may prevent recurrent attacks, but there is no guarantee.

What is safe to eat with diverticulitis?

What is safe to eat with diverticulitis?

Generally: For acute diverticulitis, I recommend low to no fiber for 4-6 weeks following diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics. Then if surgery not indicated, you may slowly add fiber back into your diet. If you buy the right groceries and order the right food in restaurants I generally do not find fiber supplements necessary.

Is it okay to eat nuts if you've had diverticulitis attacks in the past?

Controversial: While many gastroenterologist and other treating doctors still recommend to avoid eating seeds, nuts, popcorn, etc that may get "stuck" in diverticulae, there are multiple studies that suggest this isn't the case. Make of that what you will. A high fiber, vegetarian diet has been shown to be preventative.

What to do if I am 33 and I was just treated for diverticulitis, what can I eat?

What to do if I am 33 and I was just treated for diverticulitis, what can I eat?

I generally: Treat diverticulitis with 14 days of antibiotics, a liquid diet until pain and fever and white blood cell count normalize, then a low fiber diet for a full 6 weeks to let colon heal. If you are having repeated episodes of diverticulitis you should consider elective surgery to remove this portion of your colon and avoid future severe attacks or complications.

My girlfriend is currently having a diverticulitis attack and has basically fasted for 3 days. She's on anti bi's. What foods can she have right now?

My treatment: For confirmed diverticulitis is 14 days of antibiotics, start with a liquid diet until pain and fever/white cell count is normal and then advance to a very low fiber diet for 6 weeks and then get reassessed. If your friend has had multiple confirmed episodes requiring antibiotics or hospitalization, she should consider surgery to resolve it and avoid the complications of perforation, abscess, or f.

Is it ok to eat oatmeal after an attack of diverticulitis?

Not right away: Generally I recommend that for 2 weeks following a diverticulitis episode, my patients remain on a low residue diet. Which is a diet low in fiber. Oatmeal tends to have a high fiber content and I would only start that after 2 weeks.

In fact, these are forms of fiber that are beneficial in preventing diverticulosis and diverticulitis. I tell all my patients with a history of diverticulitis to eat nuts and seeds and not worry.
