Pulled muscle?: Most common is musculoskeletal reason. Kidney pain is actually much less common than thought to be. It usually hurts more with urination if the origin is kidney e.g. A stone disease. I am not discounting a broken rib but need a history of trauma or very vigorous use of muscles of this area. A point tenderness would support this possibility.
